Intoxicating.
Unforgettable like the man himself.
I let my eyes openly slow to find him staring at me. The urgency is gone, and it’s the two of us in the room. No problems, no rush to be somewhere or to save someone.
Black cotton pulls across his broad shoulders and chest. Black cargo pants and heavy boots finish his warrior mode look.
He’s dressed to deliver death.
Guns are strapped to his thighs, and another two are secured in a holster under either arm. He is a walking arsenal. I wonder if I would find grenades strapped to his belt if he turned around.
I left the men talking about the fastest way into thehacienda. Did they already form a plan?
“I’m ready to leave when you are.”
He takes my hands into his. The first clue this conversation will not turn out in my favor.
“Ares just passed over the thumb drive with all the Society member’s names to Harlon and his men. Ares is no longer actively going after them.”
“Why? What does this mean?”
Wolfe scrapes a hand down his face. “It’s getting to be too much. We are divided into too many directions. There’s not enough of us to go against all the demons crawling out of the cracks.”
“What can I do to help? You and I can take care of Ghost’s girl and Persi’s sister.”
His chuckle feels like a gut punch. “I’m serious. I can fight and shoot a gun like the rest of you.”
“I couldn’t say this in front of everyone, but you are a liability, baby. If anyone sees you there’s no way they won’t recognize the Primrose princess. Do you want that?”
Chills rake down my spine. Ice shoots into my veins. Not because he’s wrong, but by how true his words ring.
“This place is crawling with members. I wouldn’t be surprised if your mother doesn’t have spotters in here waiting for the chance to strike. She did it at the compound. What is to keep her from moving in on this place?”
He’s right. But my head is still trying to puzzle together a way where I get to participate.
“But we used the private basement and elevator so they don’t know. That is why you didn’t want me to leave the office upstairs.”
He holds my gaze and lets all the angles of how screwed we are if someone sees me.
“Now what?”
“Nova has gone into labor and he’s asked for you to go to New Orleans to help her.”
“What about you and Ares? The rest of the Savages?”
“Ares told Nova that he will go with me. Together he and I will take thehaciendaand get everyone out.”
“I guess I don’t have a choice, do I?”
I lift my chin to look into Wolfe’s dark eyes. A shadow flickers over his face. Remnants of what we shared hours ago lingers in his handsome features as if the wonderful memories drifted across his mind.
He takes my small hand in his larger one and brings it to his lips. Holding my gaze in the low light, he places a kiss atop each knuckle. Slow and methodical.
“Polaris will accompany you. You won’t be alone.”
“I need this. It’s my closure.” I try to push him away but I might as well be trying to move a boulder.
“Will you do this for me? Let me end this for the both of us.”
