This is a massive invasion that’s going down, and I’m partially worried we don’t have enough force to take them all down. It’s not normally like me to be the one to worry, but with my omega in the middle of it, I need to ensure she’s protected. And by the stolen glances from the other guys in the room, they feel the same way. Including Vinny.

Gavin tosses everyone a pair of night vision goggles before putting on his own, resting the device on his forehead. We all follow suit, prepared as much as possible for something of this magnitude.

“Ready?” Vinny asks, making eye contact with each of us, his eyes lingering longer on Haylee.

“Ready,” we all say in unison.

The door slides open, revealing ten Andoneli soldiers, kitted out in black, the white A stitched in their bullet-proof vests a stark contrast to the nondescript ones we’re wearing. Where the hell is everyone else? This can’t be it.

I bite back a curse, remembering Vinny changed their directives, putting them as more outside protection. Much good that does us now when they’re all dead. Someone’s head is going to fucking roll for this, and it’s only a matter of time until we find out who.

But I wouldn’t put it past that Archie fucker to be behind all this. Maybe even that cunt Bianca too.

After pulling down our night vision goggles and switching them on, we break off in separate directions, Vinny and I keeping Haylee between us as we slink through the halls like shadows. All the lights are out at the compound, plunging the entire house into darkness, and we are hopeful we can use it to our advantage. We know this place better than they do, so we still have the upper hand even if they are geared to see in the dark.

Anything can happen, though. We aren’t guaranteed to make it out of this alive. Except I’ll do everything in my power, even give my life to make sure she does. She must live to see this through and take her rightful place in our world.

The sounds of gunshots pierce the silent air, giving us our cue that they’ve made it inside and found the first group. We slink through the fights raging around us and head toward the hallway that leads to the gym and my special room. There’s no guarantee they haven’t found their way in through the windows in the various rooms back here, but if we can get ourselves somewhere to take them out as they come, we’ll be in a better position.

“Hunter,” Vinny’s voice cuts through the comms, “check everything from here back. Kill on sight. Haylee, head on a swivel in both directions for cast-offs. I’ll focus this way.”

“Ten-four,” Haylee and I call simultaneously.

Keeping my eyes peeled, I go from room to room, clearing them out. Shadows pass over the windows as the attackers creep past, but every window is still intact. It isn’t until the last room before my torture chamber that the glass shatters, practically exploding toward me. My heart stutters as I try to jump out of the blast radius, but my bulk slows me down. Sharp shards nick my face and hands as my back finally connects with the wall. My hands brush over my arms and face, dislodging any glass pieces embedded into my skin, and finally, I grab my cock, grateful Mini Hunter is still in one piece.

My girl would have killed them twice over if they took Mini Hunter from her. She loves him, thank you very much.

I take a moment to thank my lucky stars that these assholes didn’t use an actual bomb, or all that would be left of me are tiny little pieces of Hunter flesh and bone, probably ground into the hardwood under their feet.

My teeth grind as I watch a leg enter through the window, followed closely by a second one. I slink around the wall until I’m stationed right next to the intruder, and before his feet are firmly planted on the ground, I reach out and snatch him, slitting his throat with my favorite dagger. His body thumps to the ground as I let him go and prepare myself for someone else to try to slip through.

Two more slip through that I dispatch quickly before they even figure out what’s happening to those that made their way in before them. Something flies through the window, and the moment it hits the floor, a white, noxious gas begins to float around the room. I cover my mouth and fly toward the door, flip the lock, and slam it shut before anyone else can follow. I’m banking on the hope that they weren’t prepared enough to use them and thought ahead to bring gas masks, so that should slow them down until it clears out. If they were, they would have tossed them in before entering the premises.

My feet take me back toward where I left Vinny and Haylee, and I freeze in place as I see a red light creep around the corner. Vinny’s head turns toward Haylee, and his face contorts in horror, visible even from this far away. A pop jolts me back into action, but I know I’ll never make it in time. Vinny jumps in front of Haylee, gun outstretched, firing off a shot, and then his body jerks once, and he drops to the ground at her feet.

“Fuck,” I mutter, not even realizing they can still hear me through the comms.

Haylee’s breathing is rapid, easily discernible through the comms, drowning out the others calling instructions out.

“Haylee?” Arden’s voice coming through quiets the chatter. “Haylee, what the hell happened? Where’s Don?”

“Don is down.” Pain lances through her choked words. “Call Doc and get him here.”

Fuck. He may piss me off with his shitty attitude, but that’s my fucking brother. It would kill me to lose him, just as much as if I were to lose her. Now that he’s gotten his head out of his ass, things are finally heading in the right direction, but if we lose him, nothing will ever be the same.

How the hell did this turn from such an amazing day into one of the worst days of our lives in a matter of hours?

Stupid.

Fuck.

I can’t believe he just fucking jumped in front of a damn bullet for me.

“Haylee?” Arden calls through the comm. “Haylee, what the hell happened? Where’s Don?”

“Don is down,” I choke out. “Call Doc and get him here.”

Vinny groans at my feet, holding his lower abdomen near his hip, as blood seeps from the wound, puddling out from underneath him. His noise of distress snaps me out of my frozen state of shock just as a horde of assholes come barreling around the corner. Stepping over him, I drop to my knees, bringing up my AR and letting loose. Bullets spray everywhere, taking them out before they can even get a shot off.
