No, that wasn’t fucking possible. I saw with my own eyes what happened to the man who’d drunk vampire blood. My entire city had witnessed it. Before I had time to process anything else, Jill grabbed my arm, hauling me to my feet.

“Shoot him,” Tim demanded. “We’re taking him with us.”

Before the words were out of his mouth, Zan ducked, moving so fast that by the time Collin shot, he was already out of the way. Zan grabbed Collin’s ankle, yanking hard, and he crashed to the floor with a grunt. Zan was on his feet, his fangs out as he whirled around to attack the closest human. He got his hands around the guy’s neck, letting out a roar when Tim came up behind him, shoving a stake into his lower back. Jill joined in the fight, stabbing Zan in the stomach before he shoved her away.

“You take me, you’ll fucking die,” Zan threatened, his voice sending chills down my spine. “No one fucks with the Kane family.”

He grabbed the closest man, flinging him across the room before spinning toward Jill. Even though my wounds were healing, I was still no help with anything. I could barely fucking move. Tim leaped on Zan’s back, jabbing a needle into his neck before Zan was able to flip him off. Tim landed on his back, wheezing out breaths as Zan fell to his knees, reaching up and ripping the needle out.

He tried climbing back to his feet, but the hawthorn that Tim had shot into his bloodstream was already working. He fell forward, landing on his palms as he groaned in pain. Jill came up, stabbing another needle into his neck, pushing even more hawthorn into his system. He slumped to the floor, going unconscious. I bit my tongue, guilt clutching me as two men heaved him up. He’d just saved my life. And now he was about to be tortured for information.

“Kali.” Warner appeared beside me, his hands cupping my face as he searched my eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I choked out weakly. “I’m fine.”

“Let’s go,” Tim ordered. “We’re running out of time.”

Warner swept me into his arms, lifting me up. The two guys in front of us were dragging Zan with them, and Warner started walking with Jill at our side.

“How’d you get here?” Warner asked as we kept moving, leaving the club.

“We got Kali’s note,” Tim answered from my other side. “Collin knew about the raid, and we thought this was the best time to try and get to you.”

“You did all this to get us back?” I asked in a whisper.

Jill sighed. “We care for our own. But—”

“Yes,” Tim cut her off, giving her a pointed look. “We’re family, Kali.”

I glanced up to see Warner giving Tim a curious stare, but he didn’t say anything as we rushed down the street. We weren’t moving as fast with Zan being dragged, but there were no soldiers or vampires around. I could hear shots and screams, but it sounded like they were near the street I’d first come here through, which wasn’t very close.

“I know a way out,” I said. “The same way I used when I snuck out to put the note in the tree.”

Tim nodded. “Let’s go. We have a truck waiting in the woods.”

“Where are we going?” Warner asked.

“To the Clovers who live outside the city walls. One of their members will drive you there,” Jill answered. “It’s about six hours from here. You two will stay there.”

“And him?” I asked, my eyes going to Zan.

“He’s going to give us all the answers to end his race,” Tim stated coldly. “I don’t care what it takes. He’s going to fucking talk.”

Cold slid through my veins, even though his answer was exactly what I expected it to be.

“His brothers will come looking for him,” I whispered. “We’re all dead if they find us.”

Jill shot me a small smile. “Don’t worry, Kali. They won’t find us. This is the break we’ve been waiting for.”

Her words didn’t ease the knots growing in my stomach, but I didn’t say anything as we got closer to leaving the city. Warner’s hold tightened on me as he ran, and I rested my head on his chest, running a hand over my stomach again. Zan had saved me. And I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

Chapter30

Zan

White hot pain seared through my chest when the stake was stabbed into me only inches from my heart. I clenched my jaw, slamming my teeth together to stay silent. They’d been at this all fucking day. Jabbing stakes into every part of my body and then waiting for me to heal before starting all over again. Hawthorn was still coursing through my system, keeping me weaker than my usual strength. The guy—who I’d learned was named Tim—pulled the stake out, only to ram it into my stomach.

The chains holding me hostage rattled when I jerked, unable to stay still when he pushed it deeper. I swallowed a grunt, refusing to give him the satisfaction of showing my pain.
