“Go ahead,” I snarled. “Ask me something.”
He chuckled darkly. “No need. Did you know that we can tell it by your blood? All I need is one taste.”
Chapter26
Kali
Cold fear held me hostage as we stared at each other. I did know they could taste hawthorn. I also knew that it hurt them enough that most vampires never bit anyone who might have it in their system.
“I’ll go get someone,” Viggo muttered.
“No,” Zan growled. “I’ll do it.”
“If you ingest hawthorn, it’s going to put you on your ass for the rest of the night,” Viggo snapped. “Get someone else to drink it.”
“I think she’s lying,” Zan murmured.
“I’m not,” I hissed. “You can’t entrance me.”
He released my jaw, snagging my arm and yanking me away from the cage. A scream tore from my throat when he pushed me into Viggo, who grabbed my arms, trapping them behind my back. Warner was shouting, pleading for them to let me go. Zan stepped up to me, his arm snaking behind me until he was gripping my hair.
“Stay still,” he ordered roughly, tilting my head back even more until he had complete access to my throat.
I squeezed my eyes shut, wondering if this was it. When he realized I had no hawthorn in my veins, would he drain me? Kill me? Did it hurt? I’d never been bitten before.
A shiver jolted down my spine when his warm breath hit my skin, and I sucked in short breaths, refusing to show him my fear. My pulse went haywire when his fangs grazed my throat, and a second later, I swallowed a cry when there was a small pinch of pain as he bit me.
He sucked slowly, and other than the sting from him breaking skin, it didn’t hurt like I always imagined. I tried pulling away, and his hold on my hair tightened, not letting me move an inch.
“You son of a bitch,” Warner snarled.
“Shut up,” Viggo retorted, keeping my wrists locked behind me.
Zan didn’t drink for long, and he slowly pulled away from me. I could feel the trickle of warm blood running down my neck, and I forced my eyes open, my chest tightening when I found him staring right at me.
“Fuck me,” Zan muttered, wiping my blood from his lips, his face completely unreadable.
“You’re still standing.” Viggo released me, and I stumbled away, moving in front of the cage again with my hand on my throat. “Which means she doesn’t have hawthorn in her system.”
“Has anything you’ve said since you’ve gotten here been the truth?” Zan hissed.
Viggo crossed his arms. “Entrance her.”
“I’m telling you, it’s in her system,” Pax said, sounding nervous. “I tried entrancing her the other day about going into the woods. It didn’t work.”
My stomach flipped. He tried entrancing me? Zan scowled, pacing in front of me.
“Then she has it on her body somewhere,” Viggo replied, growing impatient.
“She was in the ocean. Anything on her body, the salt water would have ruined.” Zan stopped in front of me, his eyes going to the hand I still had pressed against where he’d bitten me. “Do you have hawthorn on you?”
His voice didn’t change, but he was still meeting my gaze. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to entrance me, but either way, I was going to lie.
“No,” I answered, trying to keep my voice steady.
He didn’t say a word, his frown growing deeper. His gaze flicked to Warner before landing back on me.
“Every human can be entranced,” Viggo grumbled. “She’s lying.”
