“How did you get out?” I hissed.

“A name,” he countered sharply. “I already have a list of humans who are dying in this house. If you don’t tell me, then I’ll kill every last one of them instead of just the ones who wronged me.”

“Garrett,” I bit out.

Zan stayed silent, and I could feel the waves of rage rolling off him. I squirmed, but he only scooted down so that he was straddling my hips instead of my stomach.

“Get off me,” I demanded.

He sucked in a deep breath, as if trying to calm himself before he responded. “Not yet. I don’t trust that you won’t try to escape me.”

“How did you get free?” I tossed back. “Did you kill them all?”

He scoffed. “The one human I killed was gullible. They usually have two people with me, but since they thought I was weak, only one came down this time. It wasn’t hard to get a hold of him and grab the key once my arms were free.”

“Thoughtyou were weak,” I breathed out. “But you weren’t, were you? Not since I let you feed.”

“Kali.” Warning filled his voice. “Don’t.”

“You used me,” I tried keeping my voice hard, but it trembled slightly as anger tore through me. “You—”

“I didn’t use you,” he cut me off. “I had no plans to leave when you offered me your blood. But things changed.”

“What things?”

“I can heareverythingthat’s talked about in this house,” he murmured. “And I overheard a conversation that made me re-evaluate when I wanted to leave.”

“Wanted to leave?” I forced out a small laugh. “How long have you known you could just escape when you wanted?”

“Since they stopped giving me hawthorn.”

“That was days ago.”

“I know.”

“Then why have you stayed?”

He didn’t reply, and even if I couldn’t see him, I could feel his stare on me.

“What do you want?” I gritted out, breaking the silence.

“I’m leaving.” He paused. “You’re coming with me, Kali.”

“No the fuck I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.” His voice left no room for arguments. “You know too many secrets about me and vampires. I can’t let you stay here when you know about all that. And…I don’t particularly care for the feeling I get when you’re not near me.”

“You can’t just force me to come with you,” I snapped, ignoring his last sentence.

“I can,” he stated. “But I want you to come by choice.”

“No.”

“So stubborn,” he grumbled. “You can’t stay here.”

“I’m not going with you.” My voice began to rise as panic set in.

Did I want to stay here? Not really with Garrett or other people I didn’t know. But I sure as hell wasn’t going with him either. I didn’t belong with vampires. And even after everything, I couldn’t forget what he was. Or what I’d done to him. I’d given up his secrets—most of them anyway. I was the reason he’d been held hostage and tortured.
