“That’s so awesome! Do you know that he pulled thespinesout of bad guys? With his hands!”
Jesus. Did he?
Marrec clears his throat with a cough but nods slowly. “Yes. We did many things to protect our home, but I am glad we no longer need to. There are things in life much more glorious than battle.”
“There are?” Nema sounds doubtful. “Like what?”
“Peace,” Marrec says simply. “Love and friendship.”
“Love?” His little nose scrunches. A gasp wipes away the confused expression on his face. “You have a mate! I didn’t know that!”
Not wanting to get caught listening in, I turn around and pretend to be observing the city, taking a few steps away. If he’s going to point at me, the kid is probably going to have a million questions, and it’s probably better that Marrec answers them.
I don’t go too far, staying within Marrec’s sight if he were to turn around. I do start to actually look at the buildings though, studying the architecture closer. My head tilting back, I follow the length of the tallest building nearby, hoping to see the top. Well, I try to, until I’m interrupted.
“Hello, lovely creature,” an unfamiliar voice purrs.
I flinch, stepping back. A huge shirtless Aprixian male has approached me, and settled himself way too close for comfort. He’s blue like Rem, but doesn’t seem nearly as innocently friendly.
“Um, hello?” I ask, not knowing if the words will come out correctly.
His wide grin tells me that they do. “I have not seen you here before.” His eyes roll down my body, and my stomach turns with discomfort. Is this guy checking me out?
I fold my arms over my middle, unsure of what to say.
“Oh you are a shy one.” He licks his lips, tongue rolling over his fanged teeth. “I always like the taste of shy ones.”
“Excuse me?”
“Oh there is no need to be so nervous, pretty one. I will take such good care of you.”
“Like fuck you will,” I snap, so tempted to slap him. “I have a mate, you creep. Back off!”
His eyes roll. “Your soul seed does not glow, do not try to fool me, female.”
“I don’t have a soul seed, jackass.” My eyes narrow. “But my mate does, and if you don’t leave me alone, he’ll make you.”
The creep snorts like he doesn’t believe me. “No male would wish to do more than bed a woman without a soul seed. You are missing parts; you should know you are lucky to be speaking with someone as spectacular as I.”
“I’mmissing parts?” I spit the offensive words back at him. “You’re missing brain cells, fuckface. I said leave me alone!”
I move to step back, seconds away from yelling for Marrec when he grabs my wrist, squeezing it tight enough to make me wince. “Do not dismiss me, female. I am being nice to you.”
“Let me go!”
No sooner than the screamed words leave my throat, his hand is wrenched off of my arm. I gasp and glass shatters as his body is thrown into the building closest to us. Caught on the metal frame, he doesn’t fall down, but grunts on impact. He’s quickly held in place by a familiar red hand around his throat. Marrec handles the male with such smooth ferocity that it looks effortless.
“You touched my mate.” The menacing voice sounds nothing like the sweet male I know, but fuck if it doesn’t send chills racing down my spine.
Faster than I can blink, my mate switches hands. Holding the male so tightly around the neck that he can’t speak, Marrec growls in his face. The bottom half of his metal arm transforms before my eyes, modifying into a glowing red sword. And it’sbuzzing—like it’s electrified.
“I should kill you for even looking at her. You touched her. Youscaredher.”
The street around us goes deathly silent.
As if suddenly realizing the danger he’s in, the alien jerks, thrashing his arms forward in an attempt to escape. Without blinking, Marrec thrusts his blade into the creep’s bicep, sinking right through the bone.
A bloody scream leaves him, and my mate retracts the sword, now dripping with blood. He settles it at the base of the male’s throat. “Are you scared now? Scared like you scared my wife? Mymate?”
