Chapter Fifteen
LINK WAS GOOD AT PEOPLE watching. He and Abe were twins and had always taken cues off of one another or from Tank, who was as close to a brother as one could get. At first, Hurricane was confident until Remi spoke. As far as any of them were aware, none of the Mejias were anything but humans with some special abilities. However, Zeus clearly knew better as did Hurricane and possibly Honor if their postures were anything to go by.
“Remi, Leon. Come on out in the open so we don’t have a war between brothers.” Brock used the voice of his alpha, ordering the males like they were part of his pack. Even stranger, the two males did as he said.
Tamara’s brothers were almost as big as he and Abe, with dark hair they kept cropped short to their heads. They’d been in the military from what he’d heard, yet as soon as they were close to him, he scented it. They were not fully human.
Leon grinned, showing larger than human teeth. “We are more but our maman is not.”
“They were part of the Shadow Ravens until they moved away with leur mère. We haven’t seen the two of you in forever. Not even when my grand-mère tried to call your maman.”
“As our maman told her, we were on a mission.” Remi inhaled, his nose and forehead crinkling.
Hurricane took a step forward. “What is that bah-ben for?”
Leon put his hand over Remi’s chest.
“Where have you been the past few hours?” Remi snarled the question.
Link moved next to the two brothers, leaving Tank and his twin with Nita. “What is it you are thinking, Remi?”
Remi’s head lifted in a jerk. “They smell of voodoo.”
“That’s it. That’s what I smelled on those women. I remember my mama talking in circles when I was a child. She kept telling me to stay away from the Voodoo. And then she pushed scents into my mind along with images. The females in town, they reminded me of what my mama was telling me to steer clear of. I was a small child who was part of a shifter pack. They told me she was crazy and lost her mind and that I was to ignore whatever she said. I mourned her loss terribly, but Seamus said it was good that she died so that she couldn’t infect me or anyone else.” Nita wiped her face against Tank’s chest.
Hurricane’s nostrils flared as if he was scenting Nita. Link moved before the other male could do something stupid like go to where his mate stood with Tank and Abe. The three of them surrounded Nita, sheltering her in their love and acceptance. If he could go back in time, he’d rip Seamus’s head off and shit down his throat only to replace the fucker’s head so he could experience what it’s like to have feces, that wasn’t his own, running through his body. He’d then rip him limb from limb, keeping him alive as he did so. Oh the things he would do to the male were atrocious but still not as horrendous as what he’d done to a child. His Nita.
“He’s gone. Zeus says he can’t return,” Nita whispered.
Link lifted her chin off of Tank’s chest, making her look at him. “Nothing and nobody will ever hurt you again.” He made the vow staring at her while his words were loud enough that Hurricane and the others with him could no doubt hear. If they had any thoughts to harm one hair on anyone he loved, Link would show them just how far he’d go to demonstrate to them what he’d do to keep his people safe. If he caught a whiff of ill intent toward Nita, he’d kill first and ask second.
“Well, this was a great first meeting. Hurricane and Honor, you’ve met your half-brother Tank. Now Remi and Leon are reintroduced to their long lost packmates, and all is about to hit the fan. Sounds about right on Earth.” Zeus clapped his hands, again creating a near sonic boom.
“Could you please not be so melodramatic, dad?”
Zeus dropped his chin to his chest. “Can someone please tell me there is not a golden haired angel standing behind me?”
“Papa, why would you want us to lie to you. You said lying is bad unless you tell us to not tell Mimi that you said a bad word.” Three small booming voices chorused.
Link stepped out of Nita’s way so she could catch the little girl heading her way before he was bowled over by their excitement. Poor Zeus, he was in for it since he had clearly not expected this family reunion.
“Did I tell you three you could piggyback in with me?” Selena muttered.
“Like mother like children,” Zeus growled, lifting the twin boys up onto one arm.
“Do not, for the love of all that is holy, burst into a million birds, ravens, bats, or whatever. I am just now getting all the hair I lost regrown.” Selena shook her mom finger at the little girl perched on Nita’s hip.
Last Halloween the entire park had decorated for the season and each home had set out candy or treats for all the children. When they’d got to Nita’s home, Selena’s daughter had surprised them all by mimicking what she’d seen Nita do, bursting into a bunch of ravens, followed by her twin brothers doing the same thing. Selena and her mates had nearly fainted until all three children reappeared unscathed.
“That’s why they’re here,” Hurricane said.
“Who?” Zeus asked.
