“You won’t. You can sit on the sofa, if you want; take a nap, if you can. I can pull it out for you. You can walk around and watch us get set up. The cleaning crew just got here. Not a lot of fun, I’m sure, but the lighting crew and music guys will be in later to test everything, and that’s really where it starts to look like what it’s going to look like tonight.”
Honor cupped Silver’s cheek and said, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but, Silver, you look wiped. If anyone needs a nap, it’s you.”
“It’s the last show. Then, we’re just doing a sculpture exhibit, which will have normal hours, and I’ll get my nights back.”
“To go find eligible bachelorettes?” Honor asked with a lifted eyebrow.
“Honor, will you go out with me?”
“What?”
“For real,” Silver said. “I mean it. A real date. I’ll pick you up at your place. I’ll bring flowers this time. We’ll go out for a nice dinner, and I’ll hold your hand as we walk. You can pick out a movie, and maybe we can make out in the theater like we’re teenagers or something.” She laughed a little, and Honor knew she was nervous. “I’ll drop you off at your door, and I won’t ask to come inside for coffee that we both know means sex. I’ll kiss you goodnight and text you when I get home that I want to go out again.”
“How do you know you’ll want to go out again when we haven’t even gone out once yet?”
Silver shrugged and said, “Well, I’m not sick of you yet, as you put it, and I can’t see that happening any time soon.” She ran a hand up the back of the borrowed T-shirt that Honor was wearing. “I want to take you out, Honor. I mean it.”
“What are we doing here, Silver? We have sex, and it’s amazing. We get along well enough, but I don’t know if–”
“Just give me a chance, Honor,” she interrupted. “I think you want what I want.”
“Yeah? What’s that?”
“To try,” Silver replied. “Yes, I’m unconventional in how I view sex and relationships, but I think you are, too. I think that scares you just as much as me asking you on an actual date scares me.”
“You’re scared?”
Silver’s eyes went wide, and she nodded.
“Why?”
“Because I want what Dev and Brandi have. I want the relationship, Honor. I’ve never found someone who wants what I want, though.”
“Sleeping with other women?”
“Letting me be my full self but understanding that I would always come home to them, so to speak.”
“So to speak, because sometimes you’d stay over with another woman? Or, I guess, women.”
“So to speak, because we’d set the rules on what both of us could do. I’m not asking someone to stay home and wait for me to get there. I’m looking for someone who wants to be their full self, too, Honor.”
“I don’t know who my full self is, Silver.”
“Maybe we can discover more about ourselves together, then,” she suggested. “For now, I am really tired. I know there are about twenty beds out there, but they’re all about to be set up for tonight, so I can pull out the futon, and if you want to maybe cram into it with me, we could take a nap together before I really need to get to work.”
“You want to take a nap?”
“With you, yes.” Silver pressed her face to Honor’s chest. “Can we?” she muttered.
It was so cute, that Honor laughed silently and nodded. Silver moved to the office door and locked it. Then, she pulled out the futon and found a blanket on the filing cabinet on the other side of the desk. She pulled off her shirt, leaving her bare breasts exposed, and removed her shoes and jeans, leaving her in boxer briefs and socks. Honor laughed then and pulled off her own jeans, leaving the shirt, her borrowed bikinis, and socks on.
“Come on… At least, let me see the girls,” Silver requested in a tired voice as she lay down on the futon.
Honor rolled her eyes at her but removed the T-shirt and stood there.
“Better,” Silver replied and motioned for Honor to join her under the blanket. “I set my alarm, so we’re good.”
“Okay,” Honor said and rested her head on Silver’s chest.
