Veronica

"How does it feel?" I ask, watching him untie my hands and feet.

"How does what feel?"

"To be a lying sack of shit."

"Go take a shower."

I pull my hand back and slap him hard on his face.

He covers his cheek with his hand and grimaces. "What the fuck, Veronica!"

"You lied!"

"I was protecting you."

"From what?"

"Them!"

"Aren't you a little savior!" I marvel.

"Look, I'm sorry."

"Whatever, Adam."

I can feel my cheeks flood with color at how angry I am at him for lying to me this whole time.

"Was any of it real?"

He sighs, and I watch my handprint turn red on his face. "All of it was except that I needed the money to work at the restaurant. I was sent there because of you. I’m attending OSU, and everything else was real. I'm still your friend."

"I was screaming for your help," I say, trembling. I feel so stupid. I feel betrayed. They are always two steps ahead. "I'm going to die, aren't I?"

"People are going to die; you're just not one of them."

"Where am I?"

"Somewhere safe."

I look around and see that the room's walls are painted black with wood furniture. There are three floor-length mirrors. A chandelier over the four-poster bed with wood carvings in intricate designs. "What the fuck is this place?"

"Rich people have more than one house, I guess."
