Lucas helped her up. ‘When do I find out where we’re going on honeymoon? My sister’s refusing to tell me. You’ve got me intrigued.’
Sarah mentally crossed her fingers, praying he’d like the trip she had planned. ‘Well, I’ve booked us a cabin in Cedar River on the shores of Green Bay in Door County, not too far from where you holidayed as a kid.’
His eyes grew wide. ‘For real?’
Sarah nodded. ‘Harper helped me book it. And then we fly to Honolulu for two weeks in Hawaii.’
He looked thrilled. ‘Wow, you really went all out. It sounds amazing.’ His expression softened as he snuggled closer and whispered in her ear, ‘You’re turning into quite the adventurer.’
He smelt divine and her insides did another flip. ‘It’s nice to surprise you for a change.’
‘Consider me surprised.’ He kissed her cheek again and pulled away to look at her. ‘Any more surprises I need to know about?’
‘Just the one.’
His eyebrows raised. ‘Come on then, hit me with it.’
She linked her fingers through his. ‘Let’s just say it’s lucky we moved to a bigger place… we’re going to need the extra bedroom.’
‘Come on, you two!’ Georgia ushered them down the walkway. ‘Everyone’s waiting inside!’
Jafrina handed Sarah her bouquet and Harper took charge of Tank.
Lucas waited until the party were out of earshot before whispering, ‘You’re… pregnant?’
‘It would appear so.’ She smiled when he skidded to a halt, looking as stunned as she’d felt when she’d seen the test results. ‘Well, come on,’ she said, urging him on. ‘Are we getting married today, or what?’
‘We’re definitely getting married.’ Before she knew what was happening, he’d swept her up in his arms and was kissing her.
Max and Elliot made disapproving noises, and Harper shouted, ‘No time for smooching! There’s plenty of time for that after you’re married.’
Lucas carefully lowered Sarah to the ground, but didn’t let go. She thought she’d experienced all the love he had to offer, but the way he looked in that moment was another level entirely.
‘I thought it was the bride who was supposed to cry?’
‘I’m an equal opportunities crier,’ he said, kissing her again, and setting off a flutter in her tummy.
Unable to delay things any further – mostly because Georgia and Harper were threatening to frogmarch them into the castle if they didn’t get a move on – they walked under the portcullis and headed inside where their collective friends and family were waiting in the grand banqueting hall.
As the bagpipes played, and the lit torches flickered on the surrounding stone walls, Sarah scanned the faces of those gathered for their celebration. Among them were Mrs Kelsey, Carla and Tyler. Her family were seated at the front, and even Lucas’s parents had made the trip over from the US. All the pain from the last six years finally melted away and she could relax and enjoy her special day.
Of course, this was no traditional wedding. Far from it. The moment Lucas and Sarah stepped through the arched doorway and made their way down the long red carpet towards the waiting officiant, the congregation burst into a spontaneous applause, accompanied by cheers, whistles and the stamping of feet. Their smiling faces were stained with tears of relief and happiness.
They weren’t the only ones.
Sarah turned to Lucas. ‘Something tells me they’re glad you showed up.’
Lucas grinned at her. ‘Wild horses wouldn’t have kept me away.’
