The men glanced at each other and then at her.
“We didn’t see a backpack, Sweetheart,” Jake said.
She started to move to the side of the bed. “I’m sorry, but I have to go. Can you tell me how far I was from this place and point me to the road?”
Jake shook his head. “No.”
She felt panic start to rise. “Please. I have to find it.”
Jake placed a hand on the blanket over her thigh to hold her in place. “Easy. We’ll find it.”
“I’ll go back and look,” Macy said.
Hannah still couldn’t force down the terror that raced through her. “No, I’ll go.”
Jake squeezed her leg. “No, Sweetheart. You’ll stay here and relax.”
“But…”
Jake shook his head. “Enough.”
Her mouth snapped shut at the hard tone of his voice. It should have scared her, but for some reason, it didn’t. Maybe for the fact that all she saw in his eyes was concern and not malice.
She nodded.
“I’ll be right back,” Macy said.
Hannah watched when Macy kissed Cat. It was passionate and hot, something she’d only seen in the movies. After Macy walked out, she turned to face Jake. She felt the heat of a blush cover her face at the gentle but knowing smile on his face. She ducked her head and stared at her lap. She felt him squeeze her leg again before lifting his hand.
“Are you hungry, Sweetheart?” Jake asked.
She shook her head.
“When was the last time you ate?” he asked.
She tried to think back, and all she could remember was eating stale crackers from the diner, which was yesterday. “I … I’m not sure.”
Jake stood. “I’ll heat up some soup. You and Cat stay here. I want you to get to know each other. I think you’re going to be the best of friends.”
“Oh, well, I don’t know wher—”
“We’ll figure it out,” Jake interrupted her before walking out.
Hannah stared at the doorway until she heard the other woman giggle. She looked at Cat. “What?”
“Nothing.”
Hannah sighed. “I’m sorry if he pushed me toward you. I probably won’t be around very long.”
“I doubt you’ll be leaving anytime soon.”
Hannah’s eyes rose to her. “Why?”
“Because I can see the way Jake looks at you.”
“Like how?”
Cat grinned. “Possessive.”
