Hannah rolled her eyes.

“Are you ready?” Cat said.

“Sure. As ready as I’m going to get.”

That night seemed even busier than before, but Hannah felt a little more confident. Her submissive choker helped, and Cat was always with Hannah, too. The guy the night before that bothered her was there, but fortunately, he kept his distance. She didn’t like how he watched her, but there was little she could do about it, so she tried to ignore it.

“Ladies. Head on up. Everyone’s either gone or getting ready to go,” Macy said.

Hannah set down her tray and stretched her head to the right and left to loosen the muscles. She turned back to Macy and Cat and saw Macy whispering something to her that made her friend blush and then laugh. She waited patiently until Cat approached her, took her arm, and led her out of the room.

Hannah smiled at the look on Cat’s face. “You look proud of yourself, so I’m assuming you got the reaction from Macy you wanted?”

“Oh, yeah.”

Hannah rolled her eyes and grinned. “You’re so bad.”

Cat chuckled. “Oh, yeah.”

Cat walked her to Jake’s door again.

“I’ll see you tomorrow. If you have time, maybe we can work on the QuickBooks again.”

Hannah nodded. “Girl, I have all the time in the world.”

“Good. I’ll come here to get you about eleven,” Cat said. “Does that work?”

“Sounds good. Good night.”

Hannah closed the door behind herself and looked around. This time, she had left a few lights on, which helped her relax a bit.

She shed the clothing in the bathroom, put her hair up, and walked into the shower. After washing, she let the hot water beat down on her shoulders. Just that and the quiet helped to ease the headache she’d had most of the night.

The fact that she hadn’t seen Jake again made it worse because her mind wouldn’t shut down the images of him and the other women. No matter how many times she told herself it was none of her business, it didn’t seem to help.

When she asked Macy about him, she was told he was downstairs again. The look she caught between him and Cat made her stomach clench. They weren’t telling her something, and she was afraid to ask, so she kept her mouth shut.

She was better off not knowing because it would just push her to leave sooner than she wanted to. She’d give herself a few weeks to enjoy having a friend before she would start looking for the next place she’d like to visit. She wanted it to be at least a state away, so she needed to save up enough money for a bus ticket and enough to enable her to rent a motel room until she found a job and apartment.

With the plans made, she felt a little calmer.

She dried off and slathered on lotion before brushing her teeth. Her hair flowed down her back as she finger-combed it. The shirt she wore to bed was in her bag in the closet.

A scream tore from her mouth when she walked into the bedroom to see Jake reclining on the bed with his boots on the floor and his eyes on her. He wore black leather pants that showed how thick his thighs were and the bulge between his legs. The white silky shirt was unbuttoned halfway down, showing her his muscular chest.

She patted her chest. “Jesus, Jake. You just about gave me a heart attack,” she said playfully.

When he didn’t smile but continued staring, the tension grew again inside her.

“You were already out of the shower when I got home.”

Her brows pinched together in confusion at his irritated tone of voice. “Okay.”

“I was hoping you’d still be in there so I could shower with you,” Jake said.

A different type of tension started to grow. The way his gaze roamed over her made her hands clench the towel she had wrapped around her torso. She had been headed into the closet to get her nightgown out of her bag.

“I didn’t know…”
