He didn’t like the way she said that. “I asked him to watch over you.”

“Well, you shouldn’t have done that. I’m not his responsibility.”

“So, who is responsible for you?”

Hannah shrugged. “Myself. It’s always been that way, and it always will.”

“So, you don’t think I care?”

“God, Jake, it doesn’t matter. I’m not going to disrupt your life.”

Fuck. He messed up somewhere if she thought he didn’t care or want her.

“Listen…” The phone on the nightstand interrupted him. “Hold on.” He reached for it. “Hello.”

“Jake, I need you,” Daniel, his cousin, said. “We have a missing little boy, and I need everyone I can get to look for him.”

“Shit. Where do you want me and the guys to meet you?” Jake said.

“In front of the sheriff’s department.”

“You got it. I’ll grab the guys and be there as soon as possible.”

“Great. Thank you.”

Jake hung up. “Hey. The sheriff needs us to help look for a kid, so we’ll have to discuss this later.” He didn’t like the expression in her eyes, but he didn’t have time right then. He cupped the side of her face and pressed his lips to hers. The kiss was hard and hot, and the hard-on he’d woken up with grew excruciating. And if he didn’t stop, it would become worse since there wasn’t anything he could do about it.

He lifted himself off her and rolled out of bed. “Rest today. You still look tired. Maybe you should stay here instead of going to the club tonight.”

“I’m fine. I promise.”

He stared at her and sighed. “I’ll call when I know anything.”

“Okay.”

He dressed and called the guys. The group of men was on their way to town when he realized he didn’t know if she had a phone, and if she did, he had no idea what the number was. He relaxed when he thought of Cat. He could get in touch with Hannah through Cat.

There were so many questions he had for Hannah. He just had to find the time to talk to her. It had to be soon because he could feel her pulling away from him, and he didn’t like it.

Chapter Fourteen

Hannah listened as Jake walked out of the condo. She didn’t understand why he acted angry, but she had other things to worry about. She needed to get up and shower before she found Cat. She had some questions for the woman.

An hour later, she was knocking on the woman’s door.

“Hey,” Cat said and smiled when she opened the door.

“Hi. I’m sorry just to drop by, but I didn’t know how to contact you.”

“Oh, it’s no problem.”

“Do you have a few minutes?”

“Of course. Come on in.”

Hannah looked around. The place had the same layout as Jake’s, but Cat’s place was more inviting and had color, whereas Jake’s décor was mostly grey, black, and tan.

“I love your place,” she said.
