Cat picked up her tray. “Let’s get these out and then take a break.”
“Okay. I’m thirsty.” She also needed some time to digest all she’d learned in the last few hours. Was this a crowd she could see herself involved with for a long time? She never thought of herself as a person who liked kink, but wasn’t that what Jake did to her? And she had loved the way he touched her. She also thought having Jake and Cat there would make it easier.
Hannah followed Cat around for a few more hours. When she saw it was two o’clock in the morning, she couldn’t believe how fast the time went. As much as she tried, she couldn’t keep her mind off Jake and what he might be doing. The fact he hadn’t checked on her hurt a bit, but again, she had to remind herself they didn’t know one another.
Cat tapped her shoulder and pointed at something behind her. When she turned, the breath caught in her throat. Jake was at the bar talking to Macy. Whatever it was made Jake angry.
When he turned and saw her, his eyes scanned over her, and his expression got darker.
Cat tugged on her arm. “Let’s head up. The bar is about ready to close.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to get you in trouble.”
“Macy already told me to.”
“Does Jake know?”
“I think so,” Cat said.
Hannah took one more look at Jake before she turned and walked off. If anything, his expression darkened. When they reached the top floor, Cat took her to Jake’s condo.
“Here’s the code to get in. I’ll give you the others later.”
“Oh, I don’t need them.”
“Yes, just in case you need one of them,” Cat said and hugged her. “Good night. I had fun tonight.”
Hannah smiled. “I didn’t think I would, but it was fun. Most of the people are very nice.”
“There are always a few in every crowd that suck, but when you’re in the club, you’re protected.”
Hannah smiled. “That’s good to know.” She waved before closing the door behind her.
The condo was dark except for the light coming in through the large windows. The shadows kind of freaked her out. She took one more look around and raced down the hallway and into the master bathroom. She locked the door and leaned against it to catch her breath. Hannah rolled her eyes. She was being so silly. She guessed some of it had to do with the fact she was very tired, but she needed to get a grip.
She shed her clothes and set them on the counter to get back to Cat, tied her hair up, and walked into the shower. She didn’t take the time to let the hot water loosen some of the tension in her shoulders but washed quickly and grabbed a towel. She dried off and slathered the lotion Cat gave her over her body.
She pulled on the shirt she wore the night before and brushed her teeth and hair before entering the bedroom. She stared at the bed for a moment before making a decision. She grabbed one of the pillows and blanket at the end of the bed before entering the living room.
Hannah made a quick bed and rolled herself in the blanket. She wanted to keep her mind off of Jake. She had so many questions but was afraid to ask him.
She’d let it go for the moment and closed her eyes. Within a minute, she was out.
And she dreamed of Jake.
Chapter Thirteen
Jake entered the condo and walked down the hall to the bedroom. When he saw the bed was still made, he felt panic rise. After checking the bathroom, even though the light was off, he walked back into the living room.
The air rushed from his lungs when he saw Hannah sleeping soundly.
Jesus, he couldn’t remember being that afraid, even when he was overseas and getting shot at most days.
He studied her for a long time before going back into the bathroom. He stripped out of his clothing and quickly showered. He wrapped a towel around his waist and brushed his teeth. Before he went to get her, he turned down the blankets and pulled on a pair of boxers.
She was in the same position she had been and didn’t even wake up when he lifted her into his arms. He set her on the mattress in the bedroom before he slid into bed. He covered them both up and then arranged her back against him.
He closed his eyes and savored the feeling of contentment. The night had been a test of his patience. Even though he knew Macy was keeping a good eye on her and he had called the bar several times to get updates, he hadn’t seen her until the bar closed.
