“All right.”
Jake watched her brush her teeth in the mirror as he did his own. It felt so natural, like they’d been doing it for a long time.
He hoped she could deal with what he needed from her because he already couldn’t see his life without her.
Chapter Six
Hannah wiped her mouth and stood back to watch him finish.
“All right, Sweetheart. Let’s get you in bed.”
She nodded and followed him into the bedroom. He lifted the blanket. “Slide in.”
She lay on the mattress and studied him while he tucked her in.
“Get some sleep. I’ll make breakfast in the morning, and then we can talk.”
Hannah nodded. “I can help.”
“Another time.” He bent forward and kissed her forehead. “Sweet dreams.”
He turned off the light before walking back into the bathroom and closing the door. She listened as the shower turned on and turned off a few minutes later. The breath caught in her throat when he came out with a towel wrapped around his waist.
Hell. She’d never seen anything that wonderful before. He had more muscles than she thought and colorful tattoos on his arms and chest. He had a small patch of hair on his chest and a line from his navel south, she guessed, to his privates. He entered the closet and came out with silky pants that rode low on his hips.
She stopped him as he started to walk out of the room. “Hey. Where are you going?”
He turned to look at her. “I’m going to sleep on the sofa tonight.”
“Oh. I can sleep on the sofa. I don’t want to take your bed.”
He leaned against the doorjamb and crossed his arms over his massive chest. “No. You’ll sleep where I tell you to.”
“But…”
“No buts, Sweetheart. Get some sleep. I’m right out here if you need me.”
“All right.” She watched him turn and walk away, and it felt like he took a part of her with him. It was silly. She’d just met him, and he hadn’t really left. He was only a few feet away.
Hannah stared up at the ceiling for over an hour. She knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep because she was wound up, so she slid out of bed, grabbed the blanket and pillow, and tiptoed to the living room. She saw Jake sprawled on one side of the sofa. She lay her pillow next to his head and crawled onto the sofa, wrapping the blanket around her.
“What are you doing, Sweetheart?”
She had thought he was asleep. “I couldn’t sleep. I thought I’d try sleeping next to you.” She sat up. “I’m sorry. I’ll go back into the bedroom.”
“No, you won’t. Come here.”
She stepped up beside him and watched him move back so he was against the sofa, and then he patted the space in front of him.
“Lay down,” he said.
“I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable.”
He sighed. “That won’t happen. I want to hold you against me as much as you need to be near me.”
Hannah nibbled on her lip, trying to think about what to do.
“Hannah. Come here now.”
