It looked like he’d be the next in line to have a human mate.

Chapter Four

Sage awoke feeling disoriented and sore. Her body was aching and stiff from not moving in her sleep, but she was surprised she didn’t feel more of the damage the men did to her. She turned her head, and her heartbeat spiked when she finally noticed the man lying beside her.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said.

So many thoughts raced through her head. The man was huge and very handsome. Although she didn’t know where she was, she still felt no real fear of him, just her situation. Even when she thought he’d lost his mind when he talked about being a shifter and being her mate.

She moved her legs around and noticed they were naked under the blanket. It helped a bit to know she at least had a big shirt on.

He told her he bathed her when she’d been awake earlier. The thought of him seeing her naked should have disturbed her. She’d never been the type of woman that liked a man’s attention or slept around with different guys. But with him, it felt right.

“Let’s get you fed.”

She watched him as he spooned delicious soup into her mouth. She couldn’t seem to tear her eyes from him.

When she was finished, he walked out of the room. He wore dark sweats and a light-blue t-shirt, filling them out very well. She also saw colorful tattoos that covered both of his arms. He was the hottest man she’d ever seen.

She couldn’t believe she was able to notice that after what she’d been through. But when he was close to her, the burn she felt grew in her gut as her desire for him rose. She’d never had this intense arousal before in her life, and she didn’t like how consuming it was.

They lay down facing each other.

“I need to know what’s going on,” she said.

He talked about them being mates and that he was a shifter. She couldn’t help it when that scared her.

“You know you sound crazy, right?” Sage asked.

“The wolf that saved you was me.”

She flinched when he reached for her. That seemed to anger him, and she didn’t mean to. It was just a lot to take in. He talked about the history of shifters, and it didn’t help her apprehension.

“I need you to believe me, so I’ll show you.”

“You’re going to show me what?” she asked.

“My wolf. Remember, at no time will it ever hurt you. You are his mate as much as mine because we are the same entity.”

He rolled off the bed and started to undress.

“Wait,” she said.

“I must be naked, Mate, or I’ll tear through my clothes. You’ll get used to all of this. I promise.”

Sage put her hands over her eyes.

She peeked through her fingers to see him grinning at her when she heard nothing.

“Watch me.”

A scream stalled in her throat when Jacob was a man one second and then a huge wolf the next. At first, she thought she was dreaming. She was hallucinating, she had to be. Shit like this didn’t happen in real life. She pressed her fingers against her eyes, hoping this would all be a dream when she opened them.

Sage gasped when she felt fur against her arms. Her eyes flew open to see the wolf lying beside her, watching her with his nose in her lap.

Her first reaction was to push it away, but seeing the look in his eyes paralyzed her. It was like he was begging her to accept him. She had no idea where the thought came from, but it felt right.

She tentatively reached out her hand and placed it on the wolf’s head. She didn’t expect his fur to be so soft, and she thought he’d stink too, but he smelled exactly like Jacob.
