Although he had squeezed as much water out of her hair as he could, it was still wet, but he didn’t know how to dry it. There was no electricity, and he’d never owned a blow-dryer.

After he covered her up, Jacob stood back and stared. It was inconceivable to him that he was looking down at his mate. The person he’d been looking for, for decades. The one he never thought he’d find. There was a slim chance he was just dreaming, but it felt so authentic this time. She felt so real. The touch of her skin and lemony scent were things he’d never had before.

She was very small, maybe five-feet-three or four. On the slim side from not eating, but that would change. Her hair was different shades of blonde, and it looked natural. It got lighter the dryer it got. The few glances of her eyes took his breath. They were light blue with green striations. He hoped their pups would have her eyes.

He put some salve on her cuts and scrapes and put cold compresses on her face to take down the swelling. When they started to mate, she would be stronger and recover easier than a regular human woman.

Just the thought of being inside of her tight cunt made him growl and his hands fist. He took a few deep breaths because there was nothing he could do about it at the moment.

While she slept, he tidied up his home. He wouldn’t be able to keep her there for long. She’d need a bathroom and electricity, and he wanted her as comfortable as possible.

Jacob lay down beside her and closed his eyes. When he placed his hand on her stomach, he felt the wolf inside him sigh in relief. He started making plans for the best way to take care of her.

Since he’d lived there, he’d made the cave cozy. He’d built a fireplace for warmth and to cook with, but most of the time, he was his wolf, so he just ate what he grabbed out running most of the time.

The food his brothers gave him was in a cold part of the cave. She’d need something to eat when she woke up. Besides being too thin, the mating heat would take a lot out of her, and then she had to heal from her injuries from the men. Fuck, he wished he could kill them all over again.

He finally slept and made it through the night without pain racking his body like it had for so long. He thanked the universe for sending her to him and saving his life.

After he rolled from the bed, he pulled on some jeans and a t-shirt and made his way into the main area.

Since it was already afternoon, he put a pot of soup on the fire to simmer, and that’s when he realized how good he felt. He still ached with the need to mate with her, but it wasn’t anything like what he’d been going through for years.

Jacob found the mirror and looked at himself. His wolf was mainly under control. He still caught glimpses of his wolf in the mirror, but mostly all he saw was a man. A very hairy one, but he was thrilled. He couldn’t do anything about his hair, but he’d shave and make himself as presentable as possible for when she woke up. The last thing she needed was to be afraid again.

Hour after hour passed, and he checked on her a lot. The day turned to night, and he decided she wouldn’t wake up anytime soon. He’d panic if he knew her body was not healing from the attacks because of her deep sleep.

The next morning, he lay beside her, fully clothed, trying to rest. She started to move around. He waited as he lay on his side, his head propped up on his elbow.

The first look was confusion but then fear quickly followed.

He held up his hand. “Easy. Nothing here is going to hurt you.”

Her head whipped toward him. “Who are you?” she asked.

“I’m your mate, Jacob.”

“My what?”

“I’ll explain it in depth later. Just know we are supposed to be together, and I’ll do everything in my power to protect you. What’s your name?”

“Sage. Tell me more because I don’t understand,” she said.

“I know. Just relax. When you’re ready, I’ll get you some soup. We need to get your strength up.”

She nodded. Her gaze went around the room. “Where is this place?”

“It’s a cave I have lived in for a few years. You’ll understand why later.”

Her gaze came back to the bed. She looked at herself, and then her grip on the blanket tightened. “Where are my clothes?”

“I took them off to bathe you. I put one of my t-shirts on you, so you wouldn’t be naked.”

“What? Why?”

He didn’t like how her voice and fear rose. “All you need to know right now is that you are safe.”

Jacob reached out slowly and set his hand on her stomach. “I know this is a lot to take in, but I promise you, you’ll understand soon. Right now, you’re tired, stressed, and hurting. Let me take care of you.”
