Sage shook her head. “No. I’m fine. I can do it.”
Jacob sighed. “Baby, you’re trembling…”
“I know. But I can take care of myself until you get home. I just need you to hurry.”
Jacob studied her and then nodded. “I’ll be there, and then we’ll have our talk.”
She knew what that meant, and she deserved the anger she saw in his face mixed with the fear of losing her.
“Come on, sis,” Gunner said. “Let’s get you home.”
Sage took one more look at her mate and then let her mate’s brother lead her to a truck and help her in. She rested her head against the back of the seat and closed her eyes.
“Everything’s going to be okay, sis,” Gunner said as he drove out of town.
She sighed. “I know. Thank you for driving me.”
“You’re welcome. Rest.”
Sage turned her head to stare out the window. She knew everything would work out, but how long would it take for her to make everything okay with her mate?
Chapter Eleven
Jacob watched as his brother drove away with his mate. He couldn’t believe the range of emotions he’d felt in the last hour. The strongest one was fear. Fuck, just the thought of losing her made him want to yell and tear something apart. It took a Herculean effort to stay calm and keep his wolf at bay.
He’d been a few blocks away when he felt a blanket of terror and despair hit him so hard it almost took him down. He started running toward the source, knowing several men had followed. When he saw his mate had a hold of a dirty man that kept hitting her, he lost it.
He wrenched the door open and demanded she release her hold on the fucker because he was afraid of him hurting her anymore. When she did, he pulled and then threw the bastard several feet. He didn’t turn from Sage because he knew someone had ahold of the guy.
He had to take several breaths to relax enough to deal with his mate. When he saw the blood on her, he felt his wolf fight to get out so he could tear the man apart, but he fought it because there were too many humans around, and secondly, he couldn’t hold or communicate with her in his wolf form.
He had no idea how he got through the next few minutes dealing with his mate and then watching his brother take her away. Jacob felt like he was teetering on the edge and fought to stay in control.
Roman, his Alpha, squeezed his shoulder. “Man, a few of us know how you feel, just remember you got to her in time, and she is now safe. That will help pacify you until you can be with her.”
Jacob exhaled and nodded. “Thank you. I needed that.”
Roman smacked his back. “Let’s get this done so you can go to her.”
Jacob nodded and followed Roman to a vehicle waiting to take them farther from town. Roman had put the man in another vehicle to give Jacob time to settle.
They drove down an old mining road, stopped at a small clearing, and got out. One of his brothers threw the man down on the ground, and then the five men with him had backed up to give him space and let him deal with it.
Jacob studied the pathetic man that lay on the ground begging.
“Who are you?” Jacob asked.
“Walter Simmons. Please. I didn’t mean any harm.”
Jacob growled. “So, why was there blood on my mate?”
“Mate? Oh, God. You’re one of those shifter people, aren’t you?” the man screamed in disbelief.
Jacob enjoyed the depth of the man’s terror.
He tipped his head forward. “I am.”
“What are you?” Walter asked.
