Chapter Thirteen

Sage woke up with her mate between her legs and his fingers inside of her. She lifted her head to look at him. “What are you doing?”

“I’m putting this cream on you. It will help with the soreness.”

She studied his expression as he concentrated on putting it everywhere he could reach inside her achy cunt. He didn’t look mad or have that residual frightened expression he had when he first got home.

Jacob looked at her. “I want to feed you and then let you get more rest. When we wake up from the nap, we’ll take a bath. How does that sound?”

She smiled. “Wonderful.”

He finished with the cream and wiped his hands on a towel by his side. “Stay here, and I’ll be right back with some food.”

“I can help,” she said.

His gaze scanned her body before he shook his head. “No, I want you to rest.”

Sage nodded and watched him walk out the door. She lay back on the pillows, pulled the blanket over herself, and stared at the ceiling. She’d made so many mistakes today, which could have destroyed their world. Would she ever be able to make it up to Jacob?

She didn’t fight the tears that filled her eyes and slid down her cheeks. She let herself go, releasing the pressure in her chest for a few minutes and then took several breaths. Sage tried to halt them before he returned, but he caught her wiping them away as he came through the door and scowled.

He set the tray down at the bottom of the bed before sitting next to her. “Why are you crying?”

She swallowed and ran her hand up and down his arm. God, she would never get sick of touching this man. “I hate that I brought turmoil into your life, and it could have turned out so much worse. We’re lucky you got to me so quickly, or everything would have ended. I’m so sorry.”

He pulled her into his arms and held her tightly against his chest.

“Enough what-ifs, Mate. You made a bad choice, but we learned from it, and you’re home safe.”

“I know. It’s just…”

He pressed a finger to her lips. “I know. But rehashing it is not going to help us. Let’s move on from this. We’ve got so much to live for.”

She nodded and sniffed. “You’re right.”

He pulled back so she could see his grin. “Haven’t you learned yet that I’m always right?”

She snorted and rolled her eyes. “We’ll see about that.”

He grinned and pulled the tray closer to them. “Let’s get some food in you, and then we’ll bathe. That will help with the soreness.”

The image of him bending her over the tub and taking her from behind made her stomach tighten.

“Enough, Mate. No more tonight,” Jacob said. “Eat.”

She could feel the heat from a blush covering her face when he seemed to catch her thoughts. It wasn’t possible. Hell. She would have said shifters were never real, and look at her now.

He handed her a cracker with cheese. “Eat. You need sustenance because of the mating heat.”

“It’s supposed to calm down, the girls said.”

He nodded. “Yes. From what I understand, in the first few weeks, your body is mutating, and it takes extra mating and thus calories to keep your strength up.”

Sage nodded. That is what the girls had told her. She was glad she had some other human women around who had shifter mates. It made it easier for her because they could answer most of her questions.

“Are you finished?” he asked.

“Yes.” She nodded.
