She got a weird vibe in the room, and the four men looked worried. Jacob shook his head at her, so she didn’t ask.
“We’ll see you soon, brothers.”
She watched the brothers leave before she turned to her mate and craned her neck to look up at him. He seemed to get bigger for some reason, and it was hell on her neck to talk to him like this.
“Let’s get some food in you,” he said.
He fed her toasted bread with jam and scrambled eggs. She ate all of it and was shocked. She never ate that much.
After they washed the dishes, Jacob started to pack.
“What can I do?”
“Go and rest.”
She opened her mouth to argue and snapped it closed when his eyes narrowed.
“Fine.”
He picked her up, took her back to the bed, and laid her down.
“I’ll be in to check on you.”
“You won’t leave, will you?”
Jacob shook his head. “No, Mate. I won’t leave the cave.”
She snuggled into the pillow. “Okay.”
She was asleep before he left the room.
Chapter Six
Jacob glanced at her one more time before he went to work. He found his duffle bags and packed all his clothing and personal items. He’d leave the pillows and blankets, pots, and pans for some other shifter to use.
His first thought went to one of his brothers having to use the cave, and it scared the hell out of him. The last thing he wanted was for them to go through what he had.
He packed the food that would spoil but left the sugar, flour, salt, and other spices there—things that wouldn’t be spoiled.
The clock on the wall told him they had to meet his brothers in an hour, so he had to get her up. He sat down beside her and swept the hair off her face.
“Baby, it’s time to go.”
She started to move around and then blinked at him. He felt the rush of pleasure that filled her expression when she looked at him, making his feelings for her soar. He bent and pressed his lips to hers. His hand cupped the side of her face as his lips consumed hers.
“Wait, we can’t, Mate. There’s no time for where this is going, and I don’t want to do anything that would make your mating heat rise because there’s nothing we can do about it until we get home.”
She sighed and nodded.
“Let’s get you dressed. I washed your jeans and dried them in front of the fire, and there are still stains on them, but I don’t have anything else for you right now. You’re going to wear my t-shirt, socks, and your shoes.”
“That’s fine,” she said.
He helped her to stand and get dressed. They made the bed together.
“I’ve got the bags at the mouth of the cave. I’m going to block this with a few boulders so animals can’t get in.”
He grunted but was able to move some tree trunks he’d cut for just this reason and then put a few boulders in front.
