“I’m pregnant.”

His eyes widen, and he swallows hard before stepping back as if I’m contagious. “Shit, I’ll open the gates, but stay in the car. I’ll call him.”

I nod. That works better than having to traipse through the clubhouse to find him.

“Pregnant? Fuck me. Must be nice having a pussy. It makes things super easy, or maybe it’s not an excuse. Tell me, Jinx, is that how you got him the first time? You lure him out with your golden snatch?” Jake grumbles in my ear.

I make sure I’m out of earshot before I tug the hoodie off and twist it to lay it over Toto.

“I don’t need to use sex to snag my target, but you do you, Jake. I don’t judge.”

He splutters, but I ignore him as I unlock the door and pull my Taser from my belt.

“You think you’re so fucking clever, don’t you—”

Screw this. I pull out the earpiece and rip off the mic, tossing them on the passenger seat. With backup like that, I’ll take my chances with the Demons. When I see the door to the clubhouse open, I climb out of my car and leave the door open.

Scooter comes thundering toward the car just as I round it. “You lying fucking cunt!” he screams at me before coming to an abrupt halt. His eyes flash as they take in my blades.

“What the fuck?”

“You skipped bail again, Scooter. You never really do learn your lessons, do you?”

“You’re a pig?” he snarls, staring at my vest as the clubhouse door opens again.

“No, I’m not a cop. I should have figured reading wasn’t your thing. I’m a fugitive recovery agent, and you need to come with me.”

“Fuck you. You freak.”

“Not even if you were the last man on earth. Now, we can do this the easy way or the hard way.” Ha, I’ve always wanted to say that.

“What the hell is going on here?” I recognize Knight’s voice but don’t take my eyes off Scooter.

“This bitch is an agent,” the guy behind Scooter says with a snarl. I recognize him as the douche from the hospital. What was his name again? Ah, right. Boomer.

“You’re the police?” Knight asks, his voice tight as more bodies fill the lot.

“No. I’m a fugitive recovery agent. I have no beef with the Chaos Demons. I’m just here for Scooter.”

“I’m going to fuck you up so bad even your mother won’t recognize you,” he snarls.

“My mother is dead, dipshit. Now I asked you if you liked it easy or hard, but I guess I know the answer already.”

“Oh, I’m going to make it hard. I’m going to—”

“You’re a bounty hunter!”

I lift my eyes at the shock in Splinter’s voice, and it’s enough for Scooter to make his move. He pulls his gun, but I’m quicker than him. I bounce on my blades and kick him in the face, the edge of the smooth metal cutting his cheek as he staggers back.

I whistle loudly, then someone yells as a two hundred pound blur of fur and teeth flies out of the car window and barrels into Scooter, pinning him to the ground by his throat.

Dead silence rings out, except for the low growl of Toto, warning his prey to stay still. Scooter whimpers but thankfully heeds his warning.

“You have two seconds to get the fuck off my property before I shoot you,” Scope snarls.

I look up at him and shrug. “I’m leaving, but I’m taking him with me.”

“The fuck you are,” Boomer snaps, stepping closer.
