Prologue

Kevin

"You'll regret this, Kevin Harrington!" Anya screams at me while I walk away from our table.

Every soul in this restaurant stares at me as she continues to screaming.

"You're the worst! I hate you! You'll come back, they all do!"

As soon as I reach the street, a guy runs towards me.

"I'll bring your car, Mr. Harrington," he says, running away before I can reply.

I brought Anya here thinking that being in public would keep her quiet when I told her I'm done. We've been fucking for almost a month, but she was starting to act like we were in a relationship.

I don't do relationships.

Not with her, not with anyone.

I've always been honest with her, but somehow she got things messed up in her head, and now here I am.

Everyone knows me and my family. I can't have Trent, my older brother, learning about this tomorrow. He’ll judge me. Not long ago he was just like me, but since he met Eliza and her beautiful daughter, he’s changed.

I just don't understand how a woman can change you like that.

"Excuse me?"

I look back to see a thin woman with a baby in her arms. She looks like she hasn't eaten or slept in days. Her eyes are surrounded by black shadows.

"Yes?' I ask.

"I'm sorry to bother you, but I haven't eaten in three days. Do you have any change you could spare?"

There's something about her that makes me want to say no, but seeing the baby in her arms, I nod slowly.

Maybe she's lying to me, but I can't risk it and have a child hungry.

"Here," I give her what little I have on me. I don't usually pay with cash anymore.

She looks at the three one hundred bills, and her eyes light up.

"Thank you. Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me."

Her words make me feel better about the situation, and I smile. "It's okay."

I'm not used to people thanking me.

She steps away from me, just to return.

"Can you hold Winston for a couple of minutes while I go to the restroom?" she asks, approaching me.

I look around, willing the valet to show up with my car so I can say no, but it doesn't happen.

"I guess," I mumble as she moves the baby into my arms, and walks towards the restaurant.

I look down at the sleeping baby in my arms, amazed by his innocence. He doesn't know how crazy this world is. How bad it can hurt when someone betrays your trust. That's why I'll never have kids. I wouldn't bear the thought of them in pain while I can't protect them.

"Mr. Harrington?"
