“I would have preferred not to tell you like this,” Beth said to Louis. “I was hoping to save it as a surprise.”

“Mission accomplished because I’m surprised.”

“I took a test before I left yesterday. I woke feeling a bit off. Not bad but… not quite right. And you know… I was late. So, I figured why not? You were in Iceland, so I couldn’t do anything. And we had no time this morning—”

He cut her off with a kiss. “This is the absolute best news. I’m so excited! Beth! Do you realise how important this is? How amazing?”

“Well, it’s not like we weren’t aware this could happen. It is less surprising than you might think—”

“It’s wonderful news,” Louis gushed. “Best news!”

“So, you are then?” Maggie confirmed.

“Yes, mother. Yes. It’s too early. We’re expecting a baby in January.”

A child burst into tears.

“I’ve got that,” Robbie said, rushing off.

“Paul?” Beth asked, looking at Vanna.

“Paul. Oh, he was terrified you’d have a baby and forget him, sweetheart.”

“I won’t. Poor thing. So much change,” Beth said. “It’s a lot for me and I’m a grownup.”

“Well, I’m happy,” Natalie said. “Relieved. You were a good investment.”

“Investment?” Beth wondered.

Vanna shook her head. “She’s… she’s in a historical novel phase.”

“Pop out a spare and you’ll be practically untouchable,” Natalie said.

Beth was appalled and fought laughter.

“She’s always been wonderful,” Louis said.

“Nat, that’s enough,” Vanna said to her daughter.

Beth snickered at Vanna. Vanna rolled her eyes.

“Well, no doubt, the press will herald you even more readily as a saint,” Louis said. “Well, I have to agree it is a great relief. I will get no credit but… we did it.”

“Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back, darling.”

“She’s the one who will suffer pregnancy. It’s dreadful,” Rita groaned. “I am sorry, darling.”

Rebecca laughed. “You shouldn’t talk to her—horrify her. You are the one who should pipe down, darling.”

“I know, I know. Well, Ravi, too bad she’s in Brussels or you’d have another client.”

“I am happy to hear it. I hope it goes smoothly,” Ravi said.

“Can I get up now?”

“Yes, darling,” Rebecca and Louis helped Beth up.

“Kiersten will have a cousin close in age. Could be worse.” Duncan shrugged.
