“It is. I have this new fire in my belly at the thought of getting a stake in the business. I really want it. So, yeah. I need to be at his house in case my parents call and want to drop in.” I take a big sip to wet my parched throat.
She wears a knowing smirk. “You’re screwed…literally. He’ll try to get in your pants the first night you stay over.”
“I accidentally passed out on his sofa last night.”
“Jesus, this gets worse by the second. Did you sleep with him?”
I shake my head. “No. I must’ve been exhausted from the big day and the alcohol I drank.” I’m not opposed to the idea of sleeping with him like I was before we started this arrangement.
“Sounds like you need wine, not tea. Do you want help packing?”
“Please,” I say excitedly. I begin to walk to my room. She follows.
She looks around at my clutter. “Where do you want me to start?”
My mouth curves into the biggest, warmest smile. I’m so grateful for our friendship.
“Can you pack my bathroom stuff?”
“Into what? I don’t see any spare cases.”
I groan and scan the room. Finding a shopping bag, I shake it out and hand it out to her. “This will do.”
She turns and walks off, calling over her shoulder, “You owe me, bitch.”
I chuckle and refocus on packing more clothes into the case.
After an hour, I have a big case, and another smaller bag overflowing with my belongings. If I need anything else, I’ll get it when I come by and visit Maddison.
“I’m kinda pissed you’re leaving me alone, but then on the flip side, I get this place to myself. I can have a guy over and you wouldn’t know.”
My mouth parts in surprise. “You wouldn’t,” I say, clutching my chest.
“As if I could. I have the biggest mouth, and if I had gossip, you’d be the first to know.”
I exhale. “Good.”
“But that works both ways, T,” she drawls out my name, and I know what she means.
I can be quiet compared to her and keep things to myself, but there isn’t anything to share about Alex and me. We’re friends with a mutual attraction to each other. Nothing more.
“Nothing will happen between Alex and me, I can assure you.”
Her face brightens at the suggestion. “I didn’t say anything about Alex.”
The corner of my lip lifts into a small smile. “As if you didn’t insinuate if something happens with Alex.”
“Well, if something does…”
I don’t bother replying, because I’m not going to win. And if something were to happen, I’d want to share it with my best friends.
I put my hands on my hips, looking at the two bags, and then back at Maddison.
“All right, that’s it. I better get over to his house,” I breathe out.
“Good luck.” And as she happily waves me goodbye, she sends me a wink. Maybe I am screwed.
