“Exactly! No. I’m not ready. You two have more of a chance of settling down than me,” I say.

They both turn toward each other and burst out laughing. And I can’t help but join them.

Blake composes himself quickly to throw back his drink in one go before demanding, “Chug, girls.”

My brows pull together, not understanding what’s the rush.

“The cab’s here,” he says, answering my silent question.

I hold the glass up and see it’s still half full. Bringing it to my lips, I drink it quickly. I should’t be drinking anymore tonight, I have work again tomorrow. I don’t want to be hungover while dealing with my arrogant asshole of a boss. He is bad enough sober.

Putting the glass down, we grab our bags. We don’t bother with coats, knowing it’s always warm inside the club. We will only be cold for the few minutes lining up.

The drive isn’t long, and when we arrive at Luxe, we join the line to get in.

Once we’re inside, Maddison and Blake go straight for the bar.

“Wait. Not for me,” I call out, grabbing Blakes arm to stop him.

“Come on,” Blake pleads, clasping his hands together and fluttering his lashes.

I playfully hit his shoulder. “No, I’m pacing myself. I’ll have one soon. I’m already warm from the first two drinks.”

“Lightweight.” Maddison laughs, and I nod.

They turn to the bar while I go looking for a free area for us to sit down. Spotting one in one of the very back corners, I turn and yell, “Blake.”

He turns, and I point in the direction I’m going in. “Chairs.”

I ease myself between all the hot suits and sleek dresses, and as I’m about to sit, I see a man sitting too. He’s on a call. I’m about to speak when I realize who it is. At the sight of Alex, I’m gulping down air like I need the breath to speak.

He hangs up and tucks the phone into his pocket.

“What a nice surprise,” his velvety voice says, pulling my gaze up to his amused face. He must’ve caught me checking him out. It’s not my fault he wears a suit so well.

“Hi, Alex,” I say, my head tilting to the side. If I was a smart woman, I’d think of a way to get up and leave and not see him for the rest of the night. But I’m not smart when it comes to Alex.

“I haven’t seen you here for a while,” he replies, his eyes dropping to my mouth.

“Yeah, I don’t come as often as you, clearly,” I tease, licking my glossy lips.

His smile broadens before his eyes meet mine and hold them. “Are you jealous?”

“What? No!” I scoff, pretending to be offended.

I’m not…right?

Even if there was a slight green-eyed monster, I would never let him know. His ego is as big as this room.

“You seem defensive.”

“And you’re being an ass,” I say without thinking. My hand flies up to my mouth, unable to comprehend the fact I just said that to him.

He doesn’t seem bothered at all. Instead, as I stare back, I see humor and a twinkle in his eye. He leans in. “I knew you’d be like this.”

I want to ask what he means by that. Knew I’d be like what?

But as Blake and Maddison take their seat, there is no way I’m asking now. I pick up my drink and take a big sip, my dry mouth thankful for the cold liquid.
