Seconds later, my cell phone rings. Logan. We never call or text during the day unless it’s about work. He knows something is up. Good. Let him stew. Let him wonder. Maybe he’ll be guilt ridden enough to come clean. Not that it will change anything. The damage is done.
There’s one more fuzzy detail I need clarification on, and I know just who to ask. Later that night when Logan is tied up with his Melchum meeting, I call Thomas.
We chat about work for a few minutes and then I start hedging, hoping he’ll take the bait.
“Mr. Pierce is nonstop busy. I’ve always wondered why he chose this summer to start up LP Financials when he’s already putting in twelve-hour workdays.”
“The man is a machine, that’s for sure. I’ve never worked with anyone who was so intelligent, focused, yet laid back.”
“Laid back?”
“Yeah. I mean, he’s losing millions right now, yet he still finds time to go to your little state in the middle of nowhere to check on the little people. No offense. Maine is cool, from what I’ve heard. He’s been working seven days a week for the past five or six months, and his clients here are starting to get annoyed with how easily he’s been handing off their accounts to Melinda, Henry, and even to me.”
“Wait. He’s handing off his big clients? Why?”
“Not sure. He’s tight lipped when it comes to pretty much everything. I’ve been picking up on a few things though. I think he’s selling out. Probably because it’s too much to manage.”
“Pierce Financials?”
“It sounds that way, but he’d be crazy to do it. Like I said, I’ve been meshing bits and pieces of conversations together. I’m not exactly in the know.”
“I wonder why he started LP while things were so crazy in Austin.”
“No idea. He’s the expert, but even he has business managers and they all urged him to wait. Sorry, Reese. I didn’t mean to freak you out. Your job is as good as gold. Worst case scenario LP bottoms out, but you’d have a job here, I’m sure. Doug and Melinda love you. Mr. Pierce must as well to entrust you with running the new company.”
“Yeah. Right.” I snort.
“Listen. I have to run. The Melchum meeting is getting heated. I can hear it from down the hall.”
He disconnects and I hang my head. I’m no closer to figuring out what’s going on with Logan’s work life, but I know his personal life is about to flip upside down.
He could have given me a promotion at the credit union instead of going through all these hoops, losing money. No one in their right mind, and Logan’s mind is brilliant, would do something so stupid unless they pitied the other person. I’m not a charity case.
Has it been pity sex as well? Hell, I’m pissed. Pissed enough to call Emerson and spill it all.
