“Hello?”

“You think you won, don’t you?”

My blood ran cold. I rose and went to the window, wanting to make sure the men Alex had sent were there.

"What do you want?"

"Simple. Drop the charges against me.”

“Why would I do that? Henry already knows about Pax.”

“Simple.” He sounded so sure of himself. “You tell the cops and the court that this is all a misunderstanding, or blame Lucas or whatever as long as I go free, or I’ll make sure Henry Banion gets custody of his bastard son.”

My knees threatened to buckle. “You’re an evil man.”

“Regardless, I need you to drop this.”

I couldn’t imagine how my father could help Henry. Henry wouldn’t need help if he wanted to take Pax from me.

“It’s not in my hands.”

“Bullshit. Don’t underestimate me, Samantha. I’ll tell everyone how you seduced Henry and took his child. I’ll tell them what a terrible mother you are.”

“I’m not—” I couldn’t think straight with the roar of terror rumbling through my brain.

“You stole his child.”

"Please don't do this. Pax is all I have left.”

"Your choice, Samantha. Do as I say or lose him forever." The line went dead.

The sound of laughter and the creaking front door snapped me back to the present. I forced a smile as Pax bounded into the living room, his blue eyes shining with excitement.

I stood, pulling myself together.

"Mommy! We had so much fun!" Pax hugged my legs, nearly knocking me off balance.

I smiled. "Really? Tell me all about it."

Henry entered the living room, and my heart ached at the sight of him. He didn’t look like he was barely containing his rage as he had the other night, but his indifference was just as difficult to accept.

"We went to the park, and Daddy pushed me on the swings really high!"

"Wow, that sounds like fun." How was I going to protect him from the storm brewing around us?

"Then we got ice cream! I had chocolate, and Daddy had vanilla."

"Did you save some for me?" I teased.

Pax’s enthusiasm dropped. “No.” He turned to Henry. “I told you she—”

“Pax, I was kidding,” I said. “Ice cream would have melted before you got it to me.”

“Okay.” Pax yawned.

“It looks like someone is ready for bed. Run up and get your PJs on.”

He made a face but acquiesced. “Bye, Daddy.”
