He kissed me again and exited my office with my panties in his coat pocket.
The click of the door shutting behind Henry echoed through my office, leaving me feeling empty and alone. My sexy time with Henry was over. Whatever happened next after telling him about Pax, I’d at least have memories of the man I’d come to love again.
I cleaned myself up with a tissue and then pushed everything away to focus on work. My fingers began to move over the keys, typing out emails and reports as if nothing had happened. But every so often, my mind would drift to Henry. His hands on my skin and the taste of his lips against mine. How wonderful he was with Pax. Would Henry still want me once he knew the truth about Pax? Would he ever be able to forgive me?
Time crawled by as I forced myself to focus on work. Just before lunch, my phone rang. I wondered if it was Henry but determined he was somewhere over the United States heading east to New York.
Checking the caller ID, my heart stopped to see my father’s name. What did he want?
"Hello?"
"Stop your investigation, Samantha." My father’s tone was cold, almost deadly.
"Excuse me?"I tried to keep my voice steady even as fear threatened.
"Drop it, Samantha. This is your only warning."
"Or what? What could you possibly do to me that you haven't done already?"
"Trust me, there are far worse things than being cut off financially. For example, imagine if certain news were to come to light. Secrets that could ruin you and Henry Banion."
My blood ran cold. Could he know the truth about Pax? But how?
I tried to act like I didn’t know what he was talking about. “You’re delusional.”
"Think of this as a friendly reminder of what's at stake... that boy of yours. Be smart, Samantha. Leave it alone."
I swallowed down the panic that he was threatening Pax. “I don’t know why you’re calling. If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about, right?"
"Drop it or face the consequences." There was a pause, and then he hung up, leaving me shaking with a mix of fury and terror. Was he bluffing or did he know something? And what something did he know? It didn’t seem possible that he knew about me and Henry or that Pax was Henry’s son. Maybe he knew I was staying with Henry and was suggesting we were having an affair, which I suppose we were. Or had been. But it would be easy to explain my staying with Henry since I was Victoria’s friend.
No, Dad had to be thinking of something else or just calling to scare me. But even as I tried to reassure myself, the truth loomed over me like a storm cloud, dark and heavy with the potential for destruction.
If Dad found out something, then maybe Alex did too. My hands trembled as I dialed Alex's number.
"Hey, Samantha, what's up?"
"Alex, I... I wonder where you are in the investigation of my father.”
“It’s still in progress. Are you okay?”
I let out a shaking breath, wishing I had some water. “My father called. He threatened me if I don’t stop looking into him.”
“Threatened how?” His voice turned serious.
“He was vague... saying something about ruining me and Henry.” Was I saying too much? Would I be exposing me and Henry?
“Sounds like the words of a guilty man.”
“Yes, but...”
“I don’t have the goods on him yet, but we have tracked down that paralegal your lawyer said he sent to see your mom. I've sent someone to interview her. I’d have gone, but with Victoria—”
“Of course, you can’t leave her.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line. “Do you want to stop the investigation?”
I sort of did. It wasn’t like I hadn’t considered giving up already.
