“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t miss little Hank’s arrival for anything.”

“Okay—” Her voice drifted into a moan that had to have been a contraction.

"Take care, Tori. Love you. See you soon.”

The call ended, leaving me with only thoughts of Victoria and Alex, knowing that their lives were about to change forever. My little girl would be a mother, and that thought filled me with a mixture of pride. What would Pax think about being an uncle at only four years old?

“I take it you’re about to be a grandad too. Then you know my concern for my grandson.”

Jesus fuck, was he still here? "Get this through your head. Stay away from me, Samantha, and Pax or I’ll make you wish you had." My voice was cold and steady as I locked eyes with Samantha's father. His face twisted with anger.

“Now get the fuck out of my house before I toss you out.”

“This isn’t over, Banion.”

“If you’re smart, it is.”

With a final lethal glare, he stormed out of my office.

Unease settled in my chest as he disappeared from my office. What dark secrets were buried beneath his deceptive surface? Did Samantha have more secrets?

I shook my head of those thoughts and instead rushed out to get my coat. “I’m going to the hospital. Tori’s in labor.”

“Oh, how wonderful,” Mrs. Tillis said, carrying a tray of cookies she’d apparently been bringing to me.

“I’ll get the car,” Knightly said, hurrying to the elevator to go down to the garage.

Traffic wasn’t too bad for the city that never sleeps. I arrived at the hospital, hurrying to the labor and delivery floor.

“Henry!” Alex rushed to me, looking dazed.

“Alex, is everything okay?”

“Victoria is fucking amazing. I’m a fucking mess. Jesus... I’m going to be a father.”

I laughed. “You can do this. Did you trudge through jungles hunting mafia types as a mercenary?”

“That was so much less scary.”

“You’re going to be fine.” I thought back to the other day when I finally let go of my resentment toward Alex in favor of supporting Victoria and her love for him. I hadn’t spoken to him yet about it. "Listen, I know I’ve been an asshole about your sleeping with my daughter and knocking her up.”

Alex sighed. “Henry, I love—”

“I know. I get it now.”

He arched a brow. “You mean now that it’s out that you slept with and knocked up her friend.”

“Touché, but yes. Well, not just that. She’s happy, Alex, and that’s all I want. As long as she’s happy with you, then we’re good.”

“Thank you, Henry. I can’t tell you how much it means to me.”

I gave him a hug. “Now go see your wife. I want to meet my grandson.”

He saluted me and entered the room.

I found a seat in the waiting room wondering if I’d hear Hank’s cry of life when he came into the world. I thought of Samantha and Pax. I’d missed his birth. Anger gnawed at me. But then I wondered who’d been there with her? Had her mother flown out to Seattle? Or had she been alone?

I’m nobody. I’m just the intern.
