Yaltah shut the door and marched over to me.
His countenance would have been frightening if his dark frown and aggressive stance had been directed at me.
His muscles rippled as he bent down to pick up our clothes.
“Get dressed,” he said. “We have to leave. Now.”
“What is it?” I said, snatching my negligee from him and pulling it on over my head. “Was that an explosion I heard?”
“Yes,” he said. “And screams. Someone is attacking the facility.”
My mouth hung open. “Attacking the facility? But why?”
He gave me a shrug. “There could be many reasons. None of them matter right now. All that matters is we get out of here. The more distance we can put between us and the facility, the better.”
He grabbed a bathrobe and held it out for me to slip my arms through.
Evidently, he didn’t want me wandering around with my body on show in the slutty negligee.
He led me toward the door and once again peeled it open.
Thump! Thump!
Boom!
There were multiple explosions now, caused by weapons I had no concept of.
The building shook as we stepped into the hallway.
Others doors were opening now, and the half-naked forms of other alien males and their mates began to emerge.
Half the males wore the same angry war-like frowns Yaltah had and immediately turned to their mates and barked at them to get dressed the same way Yaltah had with me.
Others wore expressions of indignation and confusion, scratching their heads.
Some left their mates behind and wandered further down the hallway.
Others approached Yaltah and asked him questions, but he never answered them.
He blanked them and moved on.
He reached back and took me by the hand.
“No matter what happens, keep hold of my hand,” he told me. “So long as I draw breath, no harm will come to you. Just stay close.”
I would have agreed to anything he asked of me.
Either out here or in the bedroom.
And the idea of not being by his side, of not being with him now seemed strange and unwanted.
I clutched his hand tight as we wound through the infinite corridors, and hoped and prayed that we would get out of there.
Fate had other plans.
