Gillian’s chin tilts back. She gulps for the air. She’s shaking beneath me, fingernails digging into my back. “I’m–I’m–”
I feel her come before she says anything, her pussy clenching tightly around me, pulsing with life. She keens into my shoulder, trying to mute her cry. “That’s it,” I whisper. “That’s –“ I feel the urge inside me that I’m about to release and ride her harder until I join her in a tremendous release. I drop my head into the bed and groan loudly.
Gillian’s fingers twiddle through my hair. “That felt so good,” she says. “You make me feel so…” she trails off, almost like her next words are held under lock and key. “Axel…”
“What is it, Gillian?” I ask, finally getting the strength to rise up onto my elbow and look her in the eye.
The face of the woman I love is strained with fear.
“What is it?”
“I’m scared.”
I brush her sweated hair out of her face. “Why are you scared, baby? Tell me.”
“Because–because –“
Holy shit. She’s about to beat me to the punch. I thought I would be the first to say it. In fact, I planned for it. At first, it scared me, but now I crave it.
“I…”
No. I’m going to say it first. I’m going to save her the fear.
“I love you,” we both utter at the same time. A smile spreads across my face as her eyes widen with recognition that we’ve just taken the words out of each other’s mouths. Then she smiles too.
“I love you,” I repeat. Then, I pepper kisses over her face, saying it again and again.
“Axel!” she squeals, pushing me back so we can lock eyes. “Let me say it.”
I swallow.
“I love you,” Gillian says definitively. It is a fact that will not be questioned. “I’ve loved you for seven years.”
My jaw drops.
“Longer than that. I think I was born to love you, Axel.”
“Oh, Gillian…” I shake my head in disbelief.
“It’s corny, I know, but–”
“No, I feel the same way.” I trail my fingers down from her face to her body, landing right at her stomach. I missed the most important part of our love story. Our baby growing inside of her. There is not only a hollowness to knowing I’ve missed out on Stella’s life, but also knowing I missed out on our love growing for her together. Before she was born.
As if reading my mind, Gillian presses my hand to her belly. “You’re here now, Axel. That’s more than I ever thought I’d have.”
I kiss her once more. “And I’m never going anywhere, baby. I’m here. Forever. You’re stuck with me.”
Gillian giggles. “You’re the best possible person I could be stuck with.”
“Promise?”
She touches my cheek, making sure our eyes are locked. “I promise. You are the love of my life, Axel.”
I draw her into my arms and push my face into her neck. I have no words, just actions.
I will spend the rest of my life making sure Gillian knows that I’m always here for her. And for Stella.
No matter what.
