SIX
SKY
Istretch my arms above my head and wiggle from side to side, allowing the cool sheets to breeze over my body. I normally have two children and an inferno of a husband in bed with me, so to have space in a bed is a luxury I’m not used to.
I stretch up onto my elbows as I look round for a sign of Bren.
As if on cue, the bedroom door swings open and he appears with a breakfast tray, and I smile at him. I assumed I’d wake up and give him his much-needed morning blowjob, so this is a surprise. He smiles while placing the tray on the mattress, then leans over and kisses the top of my head.
“Hurry and eat up, baby.”
I turn to watch him open the closet doors while placing a strawberry in my mouth. “I can blow you before breakfast if you want?”
He pokes his head out of the closet. “Ain’t got time. Eat up.”
My eyes narrow. “You don’t want a blowjob?”
He drags the luggage into the bedroom and lifts an eyebrow. “I do. Just don’t have time for one. You can make it up to me at home.”
“At home?”
Bren drags a hand over his head, then down to his neck where he rubs. He does this sometimes when he’s extra antsy. “Called Oscar.”
My spine straightens in panic before he waves a hand in my direction, calming me. “Don’t panic, baby. Everything’s fine.”
“Then why are we leaving? Is Paige okay?”
“Boys are fine. Paige is fine.” He exhales loudly. “Just something in Oscar’s tone made me realize he wasn’t coping, and it’s not fair on him.”
I reach over onto the nightstand for my phone because Paige reassured me she’d call if she needed us.
Glancing down to the screen, I can see there’s no messages.Odd.
“You done with breakfast?” His eyes drill into mine, making me snatch up the banana to eat while I get dressed.
I hope Oscar has coped, the last thing I want is for the boys to affect him. Not when Paige needs him to be strong for her and their baby. Guilt floods me.
BREN
As the elevator goes up to Oscar’s floor, I can’t help the ball of unease in my stomach and the hot sweat traveling up my spine.
Sky keeps side-eyeing me with worry etched on her pretty features.
The doors open and I stride ahead, preparing to listen for my hellions screams and squawks but there’s silence. And now even more worrying.
I scan my fingerprint against the door, and it opens, allowing me to step into Oscar and Paige’s apartment. My eyes roam around the room while my ears listen out for something, anything, and my hand twitches to pull out my weapon.
Paige comes into view, lifting her finger to her lip, and my eyes narrow in confusion. “They’re sleeping still. It’s six a.m., Bren. We didn’t expect you back yet.”
Sky steps in front of me. “Bren said Oscar might have been struggling?”
Paige’s eyes flit to mine, making me glance away as she bites into her lip to stifle a laugh.
“He did, actually. He had the day from hell yesterday.” My head snaps back in her direction, she didn’t think to call us? My temper skyrockets. I open my mouth, about to put her straight, but she holds up her hand to stop me. “He overcame a lot. Come see for yourself.” She tilts her head toward their spare room, and when I step into the room, my eyebrows shoot up in shock. Because Jesus, how the fuck do you make bedsheets look like a goddamn castle? With a swing, no less.
My eyes latch onto the hook above the fortress, and I glance back at Paige in confusion. Who puts a fucking hook in the ceiling? For a swing? Her cheeks pinken.
“Oh, Bren. How amazing would a swing be in our bedroom? The boys would love it!” Sky gasps in excitement, she claps her hands together while her words whirl in my mind.
