And I was. I was ready for anything, as long as Cooper and I were together.
Back home, we had dinner with Eva and Lily, and it was just like things had been before. Only better.
Cooper didn't say anything to them about his proposal or my pregnancy. I knew he was waiting until after the custody trial to tell them the news. But the girls picked up on the happier atmosphere, and we felt like a family once more.
We put them to bed together, and the girls requested I read them a bedtime story. Cooper and I exchanged glances as I read the book. I felt like a teenager again, sneaking peeks at him. I just couldn't stop smiling.
We kissed them goodnight and left their room. In the hallway, I turned to him.
I fidgeted with my hair, pulling it to the side over one shoulder. “I guess I should still sleep in my own bed tonight.” If Cooper wasn't ready to share a bedroom for his daughters’ sake, I could understand.
But he looked down at me with a lopsided smile. “Are you crazy? We're getting married and having a baby together.” He took my hands in his. “I want you with me tonight. I want you every night.”
I grinned as he took my hand and led me to bed.
* * *
“Good morning, beautiful.”
I opened my eyes to see his gorgeous face smiling at me.
A goofy grin spread across my face.
It was the first night we had slept together, and I felt giddy.
For a moment, I worried that it had all been a dream. Maybe I was still dreaming.
But as I took in his sparkling blue eyes, I knew it was real. He scooped me up in his arms and cuddled me, taking my hand in his.
I looked down at my new engagement ring. It was perfect, just like Cooper. And we were getting married.
“So you like that ring better than the first one?” he asked.
“Yes. Don’t get me wrong—the first one was pretty, but it was a little… well…”
“Gaudy?”
I laughed. “Yes.”
He grinned. “I chose that one so the judge would be able to see it from his bench.”
“He’d be able to see that rock from outer space, Cooper.”
We laughed, and he tickled me.
With a happy sigh, he moved his hands over my abdomen. “You're going to be such a good mother, Felicity.”
“I hope so,” I said. “I'm a little nervous about it.”
“You'll be fine. You're already so great with Eva and Lily.”
I squirmed against him in excitement. “It's going to be so much fun. I have a lot of work to do in the next few months. I'll have to hire more staff and train a manager to take care of everything while I'm on maternity leave.”
“You've got time to figure that out. And, by the way, I noticed in your records how many repeat customers you have now. That's a good sign, Felicity. It means your success will be sustainable.”
I sighed happily. “I can't believe how well everything is working out. Now we just need the trial to go our way tomorrow.”
“It will,” he said before he kissed me.
