In a matter of minutes, Star and I were walking to my Jeep, fully prepared to take over the world.

“So, are you happy to be in Groveton?” she asked, fidgeting with her shirt She was a petite girl. I was curious to find out where she went after Groveton. It was an enormous world out there.

“It’s nice to be here, but sometimes it feels stagnant. You either get through with no conflict, or conflict finds you and you can’t get out of its clutches.”

“That makes sense,” Star peeped. “I hope I can stay invisible.”

“Did you want to go to the big town and go shopping, or are you happy with the local market?” I asked as I turned the car onto the freeway and headed to the next town over. It would be refreshing to get out of the dorm for a few hours.

“I’m happy with whatever. I really just want to get these four years over with so I can follow my dreams,” Star announced as she rolled her window down. Her hair slapped her face as the car sped up.

“I understand that. So, what’s your dream?” I asked, probing to get to know her more.

“I want to be a therapist and help others.”

The rest of the ride was mostly silent, but I received a text from Josh.

Josh: Hey, I will not make our date tonight. We need to reschedule.

I instantly threw my phone, causing Star to jump. How fucking typical of him. I plan our entire night—an in-office picnic, dessert, and the works—and he blows me off again. That’s fine. I’ll pretend I didn’t get the text and I’ll just show up.

“Something wrong?” Star asked

“Sorry. I guess I have a bit of an anger problem. Just the usual workaholic fiancé, blowing me off to do more work. Josh. It’s our anniversary, and we had plans to celebrate at the office, but he just stood me up.”

“That sucks. I’ve never had a boyfriend for more than a month because I wouldn’t give it up.” Star laughed.

“That’s horrible.”

“That they can’t last a month or that they couldn’t wait?”

“Both!”

Now we were both laughing.

Chapter 2: Star

It didn't take long to get to the market. Having a female friend to relate to was a refreshing experience. Rarely did I find other humans relatable, but Chloe was an exception.. She was easy to talk to, even if she looked troubled.

Once we were inside, she helped me find the stuff I needed for dorm living, classes, and food preparation, such as a microwave and a plentiful supply of Red Bull to help me survive my classes.

“So, what are you going to do since you and Josh don’t have plans tonight?” I considered inviting her for a movie night, but I didn't want to annoy her.

“I’m going to the office and we’re going to have a picnic. I don’t take no for an answer, and he knows that,” she snapped. “I mean, I’m going to show up with our food, we’re going to celebrate, and then I’m going to give him the best head he’s ever had.” She laughed.

“Oh, okay.” The last bit was a bit TMI for my virgin ears.

We had scattered conversations. In a minute, we talked about our aspirations for school and life, relationships, and our perfect utopia. Somehow, I knew that, no matter what, she and I could be friends. Despite having friends elsewhere, she’d reached out to me and made me feel welcome. She would never know what that meant to me.

We stopped at a nearby ice cream place and ordered a fancy sundae and banana split. Sometimes, ice cream just hits the spot. Nothing else can.

Once we arrived back at the dorm, she assisted me with unpacking and setting up curtains on my side. I knew I would have a roommate, but I didn’t know when he would arrive.

By the time I made my bed, Chloe was dressed and ready for the surprise picnic she’d planned for her boyfriend. Their love was both beautiful and nauseating. I was excited to finally come face to face with the man responsible for the mayhem. I really wished the best for them. Maybe one day, I could have a love like theirs.

Chloe had long, flowing blond hair. Her teeth weren’t movie star perfect, but they were perfect for her—with a gap in the middle. Her lips were so full I wondered if she used lip filler or not. I had a fleeting thought about what it would be like to kiss Chloe.
