Aella chewed her lip and nodded. Diana had mentioned this before. Most of the supernaturals who frequented Hecate knew Diana was a gargoyle. But they had found out through others or after they had been around her for a while, especially the newcomers.
It had been harder at first.
Many had demanded Kamilla kick Diana out, threatening to never come back if Diana wasn’t fired. Kamilla had supported Diana without hesitation.
“Is there anything you can tell me about the werewolves?” Diana asked. “Anything in particular that you noticed about them?”
Aella bit her lip, trying to push aside the much more vivid memories of the black wolf, and focused on her attackers. “They were brown and a bit over three feet tall. Very fast. And they looked identical. As if they were twins.”
Diana cursed soundly and picked up her phone from the counter.
“What is it?” Aella asked, suddenly nervous.
“There aren’t that many twin werewolves,” Diana explained. “Actually, I only know of two pairs on this side of the city.”
“Who are you calling?” Aella asked, just as a feminine voice came from Diana’s phone.
“Diana,” said Aylana’s familiar voice. “Is everything alright?”
“Not really. I need your help, Aylana,” Diana said. “Two of your former pack members attacked Aella.”
“What the fuck? When?” came Aylana’s response.
Aella frowned. “It wasn’t that bad—”
Diana didn’t listen. “This morning. Aella was hiking in the park, and they cornered her. They would have killed her if not because a giant black wolf saved her.”
“What. The. Fuck?” Aylana asked. “And what do you mean by a giant black wolf?”
“Exactly that,” Diana answered. “A black wolf the size of a giant horse. I saw it with my own eyes.”
“Was it another werewolf?” Aylana asked.
Diana gave Aella an enquiring look. Aella shook her head.
“No, just a wolf,” Diana confirmed.
“Just a massive wolf,” Aylana said, her voice colored with disbelief. “Right. I’ll worry about the mysterious giant wolf later. Do you know which of my former pack members tried to kill Aella?”
“Well, Aella described them as brown, and about three-feet-tall,” Diana relayed. “So I’m thinking it was those two annoying little bitches.”
Aylana’s low growl sounded impressive even through the phone. “Oh my fucking gods. I’m going to kick their asses. I swear I will.”
Diana’s eyes flashed red. “Not if I beat you to it.”
“I’m not wounded!” Aella protested. “There’s no need to make a fuss.”
Diana arched a brow and put the call on speaker, setting it down on the table. “Did you hear that?”
“Loud and clear,” Aylana answered. “Hi, Aella.”
“Um, hi, Aylana.”
“Did it seem like the werewolves were going to kill you, yes or no?” Aylana asked.
Aella bit the inside of her cheek, remembering their vicious amber eyes full of bloodlust. “I don’t know.”
Diana huffed. “She’s an appalling liar.”
