She came awake, rubbing her eyes. “What time is it?”
I glanced at the clock on the wall. “2 am.”
She slipped her shoes on and stood. I took her hand, and she paused. “Those are my bags.”
I looked where she pointed, seeing two big shopping bags. One Victoria’s Secret and one some store I didn’t know. “Babe. I’m on the bike.”
“Oh.”
I spotted Lola’s truck keys hanging on a hook by the door and sent Memphis a text.
ME: MIND IF I BORROW YOUR OL’ LADY’S TRUCK?
MEMPHIS: LONG AS YOU BRING IT BACK BY NOON.
I grabbed the keys. “They’re letting us drive their truck home. Grab your stuff.”
She did, and we loaded up.
There was a cowboy hat on the dash, one of those straw ones chicks wear and look cute as hell in. Kate nabbed it and put it on, then grinned at me. Yup. Cute as hell.
She scooted on the bench seat to sit next to me. I put my arm around her, grinning.
“You tryin’ to recreate the last scene in Urban Cowboy?”
She giggled. “Sissy and Bud, best love story ever.”
My chest shook with my laughter. “Sorry to crash your fantasy, but I don’t two-step.”
“Bet you’d learn for me, though, wouldn’t you?”
She had me there. I nodded, looking out the driver’s window. “Yeah, I probably would.”
We were halfway across town when I got a call from Baja. I put my phone to my ear. “Yeah?”
“Been watching that address you gave me earlier tonight. Your man just showed up. Looks like he went to bed. Pretty sure no one else is there.”
I straightened in my seat. “I’ll meet you there in ten minutes.”
“What is it?” Kate asked.
I just shook my head and drove across town.
I parked behind Baja’s black SUV. The house was a good distance away, up a long drive in a remote area.
“What’s happening?” Kate asked.
“Got a line on Ruiz. Wait in the truck.”
“No way. I’m coming with you.”
“Not this time, you’re not. This is where that trust we’re working on starts.”
“But, Utah—”
“No buts. Lock the doors.” I kissed her and opened my door.
“Where are you going?”
