“It is to you.”

She studied me for a long moment. “Fine. Sunshine Bail Bonds. She does the filing.”

“Thank you, Connie.” I turned and Cora Lee stepped out of my way.

I walked to the booth where Memphis sat, his coffee in his hand.

“Come on.” I grabbed the check and pulled out my money clip, peeling off the amount plus an extra twenty for the tip. I dropped it at the register where Cora Lee stood. “Keep the change.”

Ten minutes later, we pulled into the lot of Sunshine Bail Bonds. The building was a converted old house painted bright yellow. I seemed to remember when I was in high school this was a used car lot and the house was painted red.

We climbed off our bikes and approached the door. It wasn’t until I had my hand on the knob and realized it was locked that I saw the little sign with the clock that said Back in an Hour. The dial of the hand was set to four. I stared through the glass. The place was dark and empty.

I turned back and stared at the only other car in the lot. “That’s her car.”

Memphis twisted to take it in. “Maybe she left with someone.”

“It’s the who in that sentence that worries me.”

“Those two creeps?”

“Wouldn’t put it past them. You ever seen ‘em around before?”

“I think I’ve seen that car before. It’s hard to miss, but I don’t know anything about those men.”

“I think I need to find out who we’re dealing with.”

“Maybe somebody in the club knows something about them.”

“Yeah. Let’s go look for the Dude.” I knew I’d have to find some time later to look for Kate. Right now, I had MC business to attend to.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Kate—

An hour after Lizzie dropped me off at the office, I stared at my father’s text.

RAY: WHAT’S SO URGENT?

Hope shot through me. He’d actually replied. Now I just had to set up a meeting someplace he would feel safe. Someplace where I could cuff him, and he wouldn’t be able to get away. It wasn’t going to be easy. I knew that. But I had to try.

The door to the office swung open, and Bill walked in. He looked tired. No, exhausted. I was running purely on caffeine. I wasn’t even sure how I’d made it through the day.

“So, you got Jim Kelly?”

“Yep.” He walked to his desk and collapsed. “How have things been here? You holdin’ down the fort okay?”

“Things have been really quiet today. Not a single bond.”

“Huh. Well, I’ll take over if you want to leave. You look tired.”

“I am, but not as tired as you look.”

“I’ll be fine. Just gettin’ too old for this shit. Gonna have to hire some more men.”

“What about me? I caught Mavis. Give me some more files.”

“What about the other two I gave you?”
