Had I missed something? Some sign I should have picked up on?
A pounding on my door brought my head around. I strode back through the townhouse and yanked the door open.
Memphis.
My shoulders slumped, and I realized I’d been hoping it was Kate returning with donuts or something.
What a fool I was.
Memphis shouldered past me. “Mornin’.”
“What are you doing here?”
He glanced at my bare chest, his gaze stopping and his brow lifting. “She’s a wildcat, huh?”
“What?” My brows drew together.
He lifted a chin at me, his eyes on my body. “She put those marks on you?”
I looked down, saw them, and ran a palm over my abraded skin as memories of last night flooded my mind.
“She still here?” Memphis asked.
“No,” I replied curtly, then turned to the kitchen. “Want coffee?”
“Sure.”
I made him a mug, and we walked outside.
“Why’d you come by? Checking to see if Kate was still here?”
Memphis chuckled. “Hate to bust your balls, but your love life is of no interest to me. But now that you mention it, did my vouching for you get you laid?”
I huffed out a laugh. “Probably not. But I think Lola’s helped.”
“So, how’d it go?”
“Great. Fantastic. I thought.” I took a gulp of coffee, feeling the hot, strong brew warm my insides.
“What do you mean? Didn’t think you ever had complaints from the ladies.”
I shrugged. “I woke up, and she was gone.”
Memphis grinned, then outright chuckled. The overwhelming desire to drive my fist into his face washed over me. Instead, I jerked my wrist and tossed the rest of my coffee over the railing.
That just made him chuckle more. “That’s a new one for you, isn’t it?”
“Yeah,” I bit out through my clamped jaw. “It is.”
“Well, you’ve always said women are only good for one thing. Right?” He shrugged and put a hand to his chest. “Now, that’s not my opinion, but you’ve always held it to be true, so why do you care she snuck out? You got what you wanted, didn’t you?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
That had him lifting a brow at me. “Come again? What’s this? Did Utah find a woman who blew a hole in his theory?”
“You gonna bust my balls, huh? That what you come over to do?”
He splayed his hands. “Just statin’ what you’ve always said. One woman is as good as the next, right?”
