“Okay. I guess I could meet him.”

“Good! I’ll give him your number.”

If she was lucky, the guy would conveniently forget to call her. “That’s fine.”

“How’s your brother doing? Loving married life?” Julia asked.

Considering Jess never asked Brett how he was doing, she didn’t know the answer. “I’m not sure.”

Julia laughed. “Oh, you’re so funny. I’ll see you next week. Have a good day.”

“Bye.”

Jess ended the call and stared at her phone. She’d prayed for guidance, then she got a phone call about a date.

Was God being funny? Or was He telling her to move on?

Chapter10

Jess

Jess grabbed the big pink box out of the passenger seat of her truck and bumped the door shut with her hip.

Abby wanted a princess castle, and she’d get a princess castle.

In the form of a tent.

The kid always seemed happy and entertained. Jess could show up to the birthday party with a cardboard box and still get a massive thank you.

Linc pulled up in his truck and parked beside hers. She stopped on the steps leading up to the dining hall. When Linc stepped out of his truck, it was instinct to stare.

His boot hit the ground hard, and he grabbed his hat off the dash. The brown shirt was the color of his dark eyes, and his jeans fit him just right.

Was he moving in slow motion? Was this the equivalent of theBaywatchrun?

Snap out of it!

She shook her head and continued up the stairs. She’d be sighing like a schoolgirl when he walked by if she didn’t get her head in the game.

“Wait up!” Linc yelled behind her.

She stopped on the porch and turned. Linc wasn’t doing theBaywatchrun anymore. He was pulling a long, flat box out of the backseat of his truck.

“What did you get her?” Jess asked when he made it to the steps.

“Bow and arrow.”

Jess’s jaw dropped.

“What?” Linc asked, looking confused and handsome at the same time.

“She’s gonna love that.”

“I know. I got one with a low draw weight. She should be able to use it.”

“Drat,” Jess whispered.

“Why? What did you get her?”
