And she’s infinitely less distracting, which I’m grateful for.
“She?” Katherine asks, her voice tight.
“Jealous?” I smirk.
“Of course not. It’s better this way. It’s not like I could work for you anymore. My dad would find out.”
“Don’t worry, princess. You’ll always be my favorite employee.”
“But I’m not your employee anymore. She hesitates. “So what are we?”
My lips curl into a smile. “I haven’t heard that question since I was fifteen.” I turn to look at her for a second. “We’re friends, princess. Just like we were before.”
“Being friends didn’t work out so well the last time,” she points out.
“No. But we’ll do better this time.”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
We arrive at Jameson’s building. I don’t say a word as she heads toward the stairs instead of using the elevators. She’ll open up to me about it eventually. Katherine opens the door and I get the sense she’s half-expecting us to find an orgy on the other side, like the last time. Instead, we find a shirtless Jameson walking around the apartment. He takes note of both of us with an arched eyebrow.
“Katie! You brought home a guest.”
“Hey,” she says uneasily. “How are you?”
“I’m good. Stop looking at me like that. I left the club as soon as you did. Came home, started Gossip Girl without you,” he states with a smile.
“Asshole,” Katherine retorts with a smile of her own.
I watch their interaction quietly, taking note of it. They’re familiar with each other, the kind of familiar that honestly leans more toward platonic than anything else.
“Can we talk about him now?” Jameson asks, shooting me a pointed glance.
“Good to see you too, Clyde,” I mutter.
“So, did you two make up? Get nasty beneath the sheets?” He waggles his eyebrows.
Katherine flushes. “Shut up, Jameson. That didn’t happen!”
“Really? So what happened?” he asks curiously.
“Nothing.”
“You didn’t get back together?”
“We were never together. We’re friends, Jamie.”
He doesn’t look convinced. “You sleep with all your friends?”
“For the love of God, Jamie!” Katherine shouts moving to stand between us. She pushes him backward.
“You tell him everything, princess?” I ask from behind her.
She whirls around to face me, biting her bottom lip. “He’s my best friend.”
“One that doesn’t sleep with her,” Jameson adds helpfully.
I laugh. He’s persistent, I’ll give him that. I walk around Katherine to face him.
