“Uh …” He frowns. “What should I say if they ask?”
That’s not a great start. Russ is usually better at improvising, but this is the highest stress situation we’ve ever been in, and it feels like this might be the thing that tips him over the edge into the start of a nervous breakdown.
He bonded with Zelena as a mate, and it’s made him more vulnerable.
For once I’m glad that I didn’t get as close to her as he was able to.
I need to get us through this so we can get her back.
That’s all that matters right now.
Everything else is only leading up to that.
“If her parents ask what your relationship is with their daughter, you tell them it’s nothing serious, and you sound like you mean it.”
Saying that makes me wince. It’s the exact opposite of what most parents would want to hear, but the Ortegas are not most parents.
“Can I throw up instead?” Russ asks, his face going a bit pale.
I shake my head slowly. “I wouldn’t advise it. Alma Ortega’s shoes are worth more than our apartment.”
“Fuck,” he mutters. “Maybe I should wait in the car.”
“That’s actually not a bad idea,” I admit after a second of thought.
He’s not a good liar, and we don’t actually need to go in there together.
I’m the one she wants to meet with.
“It’s not?” he asks, relief lighting up his voice.
“You can switch phones with me when we stop. When Seth has a name for us, get ready with a route for the drive and call me to let me know. If I don’t answer in two rings, send me the info and go on your own. I can borrow someone else’s car when I’m able to get out of the hotel.”
“That sounds like a plan I can get behind,” he agrees.
The hotel comes into view, and the thought of turning around and leaving comes and goes.
I know the Ortegas will blame me for this, and they would be right to do that.
I’m the one who let it happen. I hired Castle, and I okayed that replacement driver.
I have no doubt they brought me here to chew me out.
I don’t care if they fire me.
All I care about is finding Zelena.
I’m going in there to see if they have any information that we don’t.
As soon as Seth gives out a name, I’m out of there.
When we find her, I’m not bringing her back to the fucking tour.
She needs to be properly protected, and it’s about time someone pushed her asshole parents out of her life for good. As her fated Alpha, it’s up to me to keep her safe, and I’ll no longer do that under someone else’s rules.
