Zelena must be their girl.

Shit. How did I miss that before now?

What a fucking mess.

“Dale Marcos, this is James Archer and Russ Kent. They work security for Zelena, and they asked me to help with the search for her when she went missing.” I make the introduction while Dale eyes them suspiciously.

I know he’s reading their emotions, and now that I think they might have more feelings than they should for a woman who’s supposed to be a job to them, I can’t help worrying about how this whole mess is going to untangle. It just became a lot more complicated than I thought it was a few seconds ago.

“Where is she?” Archer repeats his earlier question.

I can tell regardless of the answer he’s ready to go looking.

“She’s inside,” Dale starts, triggering Archer’s impatient stride toward the door.

Dale shakes his head. “There’s something you guys should really know.”

“I’m listening,” Russ tells him.

“Let me guess. The crazy-ass story about the missing girl was true?” I ask, not sure I’m ready to believe it.

“That crazy-ass story wasn’t just Zane’s imagination running wild. It’s all true.”

Holy fucking shit. Zane isn’t crazy. He was telling the truth.

He was obsessed over something that really happened, and he devoted every second of his life to learning the truth. Well, he found what he was looking for. What they were both missing to complete their pack. A long-lost true mate.

This changes everything.

I thought maybe there was a chance for us.

It looks like I was wrong about that.

A bittersweet feeling crashes over me before my feelings go numb. I’m losing the only guy I ever loved to the one guy he could never forget. It’s how it should be, but it’s not what I want.

It doesn’t matter what I want.

What Dale needs is what matters.

“What are you guys talking about?” Kent asks, sounding confused.

“When she was nine years old, a kid called Zoey Rodriguez was kidnapped,” Dale says, turning his attention to him. “She was supposed to grow up with Zane and I in Silver Grove. We all knew we were fated. Zoey was never found by the police, but Zane knew it was her when he heard Zelena sing. I kind of knew then, too. It was just too crazy to believe. But Zane helped her get her memories back. She remembers us now.”

He's smiling, and I know it’s because he’s found where he belongs.

The quiet guy with the sad eyes is long gone.

“You got your pack,” I murmur. “I’m happy for you.”

“Wait,” Kent says. “Zelena has more fated mates?”

Dale turns his smile on Kent. “Why don’t you go ask her? She’s in the kitchen.”

He doesn’t need to be told twice. He moves past us.

Now we’re finally alone, and there’s nothing left to say.

We were already finished. I knew we’d never last.
