“A sandwich would be great,” I murmur, catching the fresh baked bread smell from the loaf on the counter and starting to feel ravenous.
He gets a plate and sets it down next to the loaf.
Then, he picks up a knife and starts slicing the bread.
“So, we’re on a private island,” I murmur. “How did we get out here, exactly?”
“I forgot how much you love to ask questions,” he says, shaking his head.
“Well, then maybe you should think twice before your next kidnapping.”
“There is no next kidnapping,” he tells me, as he puts the knife down on the counter. “This is the one and only time I’ve ever planned to kidnap anyone, and it was a last resort.”
“I’m sure,” I tease, liking how bemused he seems by my responses. “So, do you own a boat, or a plane?”
“I flew us out here,” he admits. “I learned how to fly when I bought the island.”
“Wow. So, you bought this island a few years ago, then you got your pilot’s license, and then you started building this place?” It feels like a lot of work for a plan that was a last resort, but we are true mates, and he did have to work pretty hard to get me out here.
Don’t be too impressed, Zey. He kidnapped you. That’s messed up.
Yeah, well, it’s not like he’s got a screw loose.
He didn’t have any other options.
He did what he had to do.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t kind of turned on by how hard he worked to get to me. So, the whole kidnapping part was traumatic, and it’s completely put me off ever getting back in that custom-made box, but that was for a good reason. He wanted me to remember my past.
He wanted me to remember him.
I know I’d want the same thing if our situations were reversed. True mates are meant to be together.
They’re made for each other.
We’re pieces of the same puzzle. We fit.
“Pretty much,” he tells me, as he starts to butter the bread.
“When were you planning on opening this hotel to the public?”
He shrugs, not looking up. “In another year or so, maybe. Once it’s finished.”
“Seriously? The finishing work seems superficial. Don’t you want …”
I trail off when he looks up at me. Those green eyes watch me so intently that I lose my breath.
I don’t need any words to tell me what his plan is for the immediate future, but he gives me an answer anyway. “I want to make sure my mates are happy before I start making any plans to open for business.”
My skin flushes again. I had no idea what I was missing out on not being around an Alpha.
He seems to know exactly what to do and say to make me feel taken care of.
Just like Russ. Okay, maybe it’s more a mate thing than an Alpha thing.
I bite my lip. I should tell him about my other mates.
I’m a little afraid of how he’ll react.
