I’m about to double check if he wants to drive around the grove while we’re in the air, but he moves forward suddenly and climbs into the back of the copter, sitting down quickly.

“Belt up!” Harris calls out, before he slaps the door shut.

My old friend turns to me with a raised eyebrow. “Are you sure about bringing Kent this time?”

I haven’t told him Zelena’s our mate, and I feel bad about the deception, but no one knows other than Russ and I, and it’s safer that way until her contract is up and she’s free to be ours.

Without the explanation, he’s not going to fully understand why Russ has to put himself through this a second time. I know he’s not afraid of flying, but Harris doesn’t, so I decide to go with that.

“It’s a fear he’s working on getting over.” I shrug back at him. “He’ll be fine.”

“If you say so,” Harris says. “I’m going to do my usual checks out here before take off. I refueled when you called, but I just need to check we’re good to go. It might take a minute.”

He opens the passenger side door and I get in, looking back at Russ. In the dark, enclosed space, his face seems even more ghostly pale. He looks about ready to pass out. That might not be a bad thing, under the circumstances.

“You doing okay?” I ask as Harris closes the door.

“I’ll be fine,” Russ murmurs. “What’s your crazy pilot friend up to?”

He sounds agitated. For a second, I think about ordering him to go back to driving around.

My attention will be split if I’m worried about how he’s dealing with the flight.

I could miss something important.

“Uh, Harris is just doing his usual safety checks. It might take a few.”

He nods. “I forgot about that part.”

He looks out the window, and I know I can’t ask him to leave.

This is our best shot at finding Zelena.

She belongs to both of us, even if she doesn’t know that yet, but she’s made a real, solid connection with him. She has real, deep feelings for my Beta. They forged a friendship that took close to eighteen months to turn into something more.

He’s the one she needs to see when we find her.

He’s the one who’ll make her feel safest.

He can cope with a little air sickness to make her feel secure when we get to her.

She’s out there somewhere, waiting for us.

We’re going to find our true mate, just like we did the first time.

She’s fated to us, and we’re meant to be together.

No one and nothing can stop destiny.

We’ll find her. I know we will.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Zelena

The hallway is blindingly bright, painted a pure shade of white with a tall ceiling full of high wattage light fittings. It’s not familiar like the bedroom was. It feels like a dramatic backdrop to a photoshoot, or a music video, I guess, but it doesn’t make me feel anything, other than the need to squint my eyes. The desire to close the door on the bright corridor comes and goes.

It won’t do me any good to stay in that room just because it feels good.
