At this point, that’s probably a good thing. If he suddenly started to give me what I’ve been waiting for all these years, I’d feel like a consolation prize.

It’s been way too long. The shine has rubbed off.

I moved on. He stayed stuck.

We lost touch, until he reached out to tell me he’d figured it out.

I waited for him to tell me he’d realized how big of an asshole he’d been, and to back that up with an apology, but instead he blurted out that he’d found a way to get to her.

My heart sank into my stomach.

He’s gone. Totally fucking gone.

I mean, I already knew, but this … This was like seeing the final nail being hammered into his coffin.

I doubt he can come back from this, but tonight is going to be my first and last attempt to help him move on from the past. Nothing I did snapped him out of his obsession when we were kids.

All I could do back then was walk away.

Now, maybe, when he sees this isn’t what he thinks it is …

I don’t know who I think I’m kidding.

Zane never admits it when he’s wrong.

Chapter Eighteen

Zelena

When the curtain falls after my encore, the euphoria doesn’t fade the same way it usually does after a show. I’m still buzzing on a serious high as I step out of my heels and follow Anna back to my dressing room. I know it’s because I get to see my mate again soon.

Anna is being her usual quietly scowling, professionally efficient self.

“Hey, wait up!” Dave, the security guard who’s been crushing on her, is darting down the hallway toward us, just as we get to the dressing room’s door.

She unlocks it and ushers me inside, sighing under her breath as she follows me in.

I raise an eyebrow at her, and she surprises me by keeping the door open, even if she’s standing in the gap, with no intention of letting her hook-up into the room.

“We’re on a schedule!” she hisses at him as he appears outside the room.

He nods at me before his gaze zeroes in on her. “Sorry, I just had to see you.”

“Well, you’ve seen me, so …” she starts, keeping her voice low.

“I got us a table at The Tower tonight.”

“I told you this is never going to work out.”

Huh. She’s trying to break things off.

She’s feeling conflicted, so clearly, she likes him.

He doesn’t seem to be dissuaded by her words. He feels as happy as he did a second ago when he was rushing down the hall to catch up with us.

“Come to dinner. I promise you won’t regret it.”

She sighs softly. “What time should I be ready?”
