“What?” Conner’s brows furrowed. “Why?”
“Because of her heart transplant. She said it’s too risky, and she’s not taking the chance.”
“I can understand that,” Conner said. “Can you?”
“Yes, of course, I understand, but plenty of women who received heart transplants have children.”
“Then all you have to do is ease her fears. Do the research, bro. That is one of your specialties. She’ll come around. She’s just scared. Maybe she should talk to Charlotte about it.”
“Yeah, maybe. I don’t know. She told me last night she doesn’t want to discuss it again.”
“Well, the two of you need to get it straightened out before you get married.”
“I’ll still marry her regardless. She’s the most important person to me.”
“More than your twin brother?” His brow arched.
“I’m not answering that.” I smirked as I balled up the sandwich wrapper and threw it at him.
CHAPTER14
Charleigh
“Hey.” I walked into Christian’s office and found him sitting behind his desk.
“Morning.” A smile crossed his lips.
“I went to check on Sofia’s surgery and saw it was canceled. What happened?” I walked over to him and sat on his lap.
“She’s pregnant.”
“What? Oh, my God!”
“She and Nathan were just as shocked when Conner delivered the news.”
“I bet they were. She told us girls that she wanted another baby, but not for a couple of more years at least.”
“I guess God had other plans for them,” he said. “Listen, about last night—”
“I’m sorry,” I said as I placed my hand on his cheek. “I knew the day would come when we would have to discuss children.”
“Charleigh, plenty of women who have—”
I placed my fingers over his lips. “I don’t want to talk about it right now.” I got up from his lap. “I have patients to see.”
“We need to discuss this, Charleigh,” he said as I walked out of his office.
I barely saw Christian all day. You could say I was avoiding him. I loved him more than anyone or anything in the world, and as badly as I wanted to give him a child, I couldn’t. The fear that took over me was too real.
I saw on the surgical board that Christian got pulled into emergency surgery, so I pulled my phone from my pocket and sent him a message.
“I’m going to my dad’s bar for a while. I’ll see you when I get home. I love you.”
I stepped through the door and went behind the bar.
“Hey, Charleigh.” Dominic smiled.
“Hi, Dominic. Is my dad around?”
