“Happy New Year, Christian.”

“Can I have everyone’s attention?” Sam shouted as he stood in the middle of the room, holding a drink in his hand. “Last year was eventful, both bad and good. There’s no shortage of events when it comes to this family. Now, we’re ringing in this new year with even more incredible events to come. The birth of our third child. The birth of Sebastian and Emilia’s child. The birth of Conner and Charlotte’s child. And our sister Nora, who will be raised and taken care of by all of us for the rest of her life. Christian and Charleigh are getting married in a couple of months, and our cousins Grayson & Gabriel will be moving to the beach where they belong. To our family. The Kind family.” He held up his glass. “Life is family, and family is life.” He winked at Nathan. “And we sure have one hell of a family. Happy New Year, fam.” The corners of his mouth curved upward.

CHAPTER10

Charleigh

“Good morning, Mrs. James.” I smiled when I stepped inside her room. “How are you feeling?”

“I feel okay.”

I walked over and checked her vitals.

“You gave us quite a scare again last night in the ER.” I gently smiled as I listened to her heart.

“I think my husband was more scared than I was.” The corners of her mouth curved upward. “Where is that man? I need my Starbucks.”

I let out a laugh as I opened her chart.

“The night shift nurse didn’t draw your blood before she left this morning?” My brows furrowed.

“No. I don’t think she did. Let me tell you something about that woman. She is one of the rudest people I have ever come across. I had to push the call button six times before she came in here. And when she did, she had a bad attitude, like I was interrupting her.”

“I’m sorry about that. I’ll have a talk with her. I’ll go get my blood draw kit and be back in a flash.” I smiled. “Hi, Mr. James,” I said as I was walking out of the room, and he was walking in with two Starbucks coffees and a small white bag.

“Good morning, Charleigh. This is for you.” He handed me the white bag. “It’s a blueberry muffin.”

“Mr. James, you are so sweet. Thank you.” I placed my hand on his shoulder.

“You’re welcome, darling.”

I grabbed the blood draw supplies and walked back into the room.

“You won’t feel a thing.” I smiled at Mrs. James.

“Have you and my handsome surgeon set a wedding date yet?” she asked. “Last time I was in here, he had just proposed.”

“We have.” I grinned as I labeled her vials of blood. “We’re getting married on March 16th.”

“Of next year?”

“Nope.” A grin crossed my face. “This year.”

“Oh lord, child. You have your work cut out for you. How does one plan a wedding in two months?”

“It’s not hard when you have an incredible fiancé and a village to help.”

“You know.” Mrs. James smiled. “Marty and I have our fortieth wedding anniversary coming up tomorrow, and I would appreciate it if I could celebrate at home.” A smirk crossed her lips.

“It’s hard to believe I’ve been married to this stubborn woman for forty years already,” Mr. James said as he gently squeezed her hand. “It still feels like I just met her yesterday.”

“Marty, stop.” Mrs. James blushed.

“You two are the epitome of a perfect marriage.”

“Good morning, Mrs. James.” Christian walked into the room. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m getting there, Dr. Kind. Charleigh told us you two set a wedding date.”
