Within seconds, my phone rang.

“Hey,” I answered.

“Hey, Christian. Who is your patient?”

“A Dr. Lenox.”

“Oh wow. He was one of my psych professors, and we worked together briefly at Hope Memorial before he went into private practice. Why does he want to see me?”

“He said he has a patient he wants you to take over for him.”

“Take over for him? Is he dying?”

“He has congenital heart failure.”

“Oh shit. Did you tell him that I’m on maternity leave?”

“No, I didn’t. I guess I should have.”

“No worries. I’ll come up and see him later. Thanks, Christian.”

“You’re welcome, Charlotte. I’ll see you later.”

CHAPTER32

Charlotte

“What was that all about?” Conner asked as he fed Isabella a bottle.

“I’m not sure. An old professor of mine whom I highly respected wants to see me about taking over a patient of his.”

“That’s odd. Isn’t that right, my sweet angel.” He smiled at our daughter.

“Christian said he has congestive heart failure. I’ll go see him later.”

“Go now,” Conner said.

“I really don’t want to take the baby to the hospital.”

“That’s why she’s staying with her daddy. You want to stay here at work with Daddy, don’t you? My patients would love to meet you.”

“Are you sure, babe?” I asked him.

“Really, Charlotte?” He cocked his head at me.

“Right. You’re an obsessive father who has separation anxiety. We need to work on that.” A smirk crossed my lips.

“I love you. Now, give us a kiss and get the hell out of here.”

I walked over to Conner’s desk, kissed my daughter’s head, and kissed my husband’s lips.

“I love you too.”

I left the medical center and headed to the hospital. Christian sent me a text message with which room Mr. Lenox was in. I stopped at the gift shop and picked up a cute floral arrangement before going up to the Cardiac unit. When I approached room 3119, Mr. Lenox turned his head and smiled.

“Charlotte.” He held out his hand. “It is so good to see you.”

“Dr. Lenox, how are you?” I set the flower arrangement on the table.
