After they left, Simon rolled his eyes.

“Looks like stepdaddy Curtis is back.” I smiled as I patted Simon’s back.

“I can’t be mad because I actually like the guy and always have.” He smirked.

“Simon.” Grace walked over. “Nora wants you in the pool.”

“Coming, sweetheart,” Simon shouted as he looked over at her.

Sofia and Charlotte walked over and set a large tray of cupcakes on the table.

“What are all these cupcakes for?” I asked.

“Well, we were going to wait until tomorrow, but since you and Charleigh are back, Sofia and I don’t want to wait. We found out the sex of the baby.” Nathan smiled.

“You found out? What about a gender reveal party?” I asked.

“Sofia said we didn’t need a huge gender reveal. So, we decided to do it this way.”

“What about Aunt Barb?”

“We told her yesterday when we found out,” he said.

“Everyone gather around,” Sofia said as she handed us each a cupcake. “Inside the cupcake is either pink or blue filling. When you bite into it, you will know the gender of our baby.” A grin crossed her face. “So, when I count to three, everyone take a big bite. One. Two. Three!”

We all bit into our cupcakes at the same time, and I smiled when I saw the pink filling.

“A little girl.” I smiled as I hooked my arm around Nathan. Congrats, bro.”

CHAPTER31

TWO WEEKS LATER

Christian

I had just gotten out of surgery when my pager went off.

“Now what.” I sighed.

It was a 911 from the ER, room six. Running down the stairwell, I stepped into the room and saw Mr. James lying there, the monitor beeping and showing a flatline as Grayson tried to revive him.

“Oh, come on, Mr. James. No,” I said as I rushed over to him and took over.

“Christian, it’s been over thirty minutes,” Grayson said.

I wouldn’t stop because I didn’t want to lose him.

“Christian.” Grayson placed his hand on my back. “It’s time to call it. We did everything we could to save him, but he was already gone when the paramedics brought him.”

I stopped and called time of death.

“I’m sorry,” Grayson said. “Isn’t he the one whose wife passed away not too long ago?”

“Yeah. It looks like I couldn’t save his broken heart.”

“I guess some people don’t want to move on after their loved one passes.” He patted my back. “Again, I’m sorry.”

I took in a deep breath because Charleigh was going to be devastated. I knew she was up on the cardiac floor, and this was going to ruin her day. Taking the elevator up, I found her standing at the nurses’ station.
