“Dr. Kind, Dr. Kind is here. She’s in labor.”
“Charlotte is here?” I looked at her.
“Yes. They just took her up to Labor & Delivery.”
“Shit. Thanks for letting me know.” I walked out of the room, pulled my phone from my pocket, and called Shaun.
“What’s up, Christian?”
“You better have your pilot on alert. Charlotte’s in labor. Connor needs to get back here ASAP.”
“Shit. I’ll call him now. Thanks, cousin.”
Just as I placed my phone in my pocket, it rang. Pulling it out, I saw it was Conner.
“Hey, bro.”
“Christian, tell me you’re at the hospital,” he spoke in a panic.
“I’m here and on my way up to see Charlotte.”
“Thank God. Please help her until I get there. I can’t fucking believe this. She isn’t due for another week and a half. The one fucking day I go to San Francisco.”
“Bro, calm down. The flight is a little over an hour. You’ll be here in plenty of time to see your baby come into the world. I already called Shaun and told him to have his pilot on alert. You’ll be here in no time.”
“Thanks, bro. Nathan and I are leaving the conference now and heading to the hangar. Please, stay with her. I just got off the phone with her, and she’s cussing me out.”
“I will as long as an emergency doesn’t come up.”
“Then get someone else to cover. Your niece is being born, and I want you there!”
“I’m stepping into the elevator now. I’ll see you when you get here.”
I walked into Charlotte’s room as the nurse was strapping the fetal monitor to her.
“Look who’s here.” I smiled as I took hold of her hand.
“I was in the middle of a session with a patient when my water broke. Georgia told me to get here, and she’ll check in on me later.”
“No contractions yet?”
“Not yet. Thank God.”
“Conner is on his way back right now.”
“He fucking better be. I told him last week that I didn’t think it was a good idea that he went to that conference for the day, but to quote him, ‘Babe, there’s no way our princess is coming early. Besides, it’s only for the day. I’ll be back in the evening. You’ll be okay.’”
I let out a laugh.
“And you will be okay.” I squeezed her hand.
“Oh shit!” she yelled as she placed her hands on her belly. “Oh, my God.”
I glanced at the fetal monitor. “Congratulations, Charlotte. You just had your first contraction.”
“Dr. Kind, I have to check Dr. Kind,” said Carly, Charlotte’s nurse.
“Okay. Let me know when you’re done.
